Here's what's happening this weekend in District 10 postseason wrestling, diving

The District 10 high school winter sports postseason kicks into high gear this weekend.

Although there's a packed basketball playoff schedule, there's even more for high school sports fans to take in on the D-10 docket.

District 10 championships are set to take place for Class 2A wrestling and for boys and girls diving in Classes 2A and 3A.

Wrestling tournaments in Sharon and Altoona

The District 10 Class 2A wrestling tournament runs Friday and Saturday at Sharon High School. Wrestling starts with preliminaries and quarterfinals Friday at 5 p.m. Saturday's action starts at 9:15 a.m. with consolation rounds. Medal-round bouts begin at 3:30 p.m. and the finals are set for 5:30.

Brackets for the D-10 2A tournament are available at piaadistrict10.org.

Defending champion Reynolds edged Hickory by 4½ points last season in the team standings. The Raiders have 11 wrestlers entered in the tournament this season, while Hickory is now a Class 3A team. The Raiders' Angelo Lomonte (107 pounds), Chase Bell (133) and Jalen Wagner (172) are coming off Section 2-AA tournament titles.

Fort LeBoeuf will have all 13 of starters at districts including Section 1-AA champs Jake Bennett (121 pounds), JoJo Przybycien (133) and Conner McChesney (172).

Returning D-10 2A champions include Conneaut's Hunter Gould (120 pounds last season, 127 this season) and Collin Hearn (160, 160); Fort LeBoeuf's Przybycien (126, 133); Grove City's Hunter Hohman (152, 160), and Titusville's Brock Covell (172, 172).

Northwestern sophomore Sierra Chiesa, the only female wrestler at the Section 1-AA meet last week, won the section title at 107 and tops the upper half of the D-10 bracket.

The top eight finishers advance to the Northwest Class 2A Regional tournament at Sharon on March 3-4.

Also this weekend, the Northwest Class 3A Regional tournament will take place at Altoona High School. Action starts Friday with quarterfinals at 4:30 p.m. The tournament resumes Saturday at 10:30 a.m., with championship bouts and consolation finals beginning at 5:15 p.m.

None of District 10's 3A wrestlers won gold at regionals last season, although several advanced out of it to the PIAA tournament. Returning regional bronze medalists are Cathedral Prep's Keagan Oler (won last year at 106, now at 121), and McDowell's Caleb Butterfield (160, 160) and Troy Peterson (215, 215).

The Trojans had seven champions at districts last week, including Butterfield and Peterson, while the Ramblers won the D-10 3A team title with three champs including Oler. Hickory also had three district champs in its first season at Class 3A.

McDowell's Logan Sallot (114) is the lone D-10 wrestler who is seeded first at regionals. The district's No. 2 seeds include McDowell's Butterfield (160), Artis Simmons (152), Peterson (215) and Jack Sroka (285); Hickory's Brody Bishop (107) and Connor Saylor (139); and Cathedral Prep's Sam Staab (127).

The top three finishers are guaranteed to advance to the PIAA tournament, which is scheduled for March 9-11 at the Giant Center in Hershey.

Diving championships at McDowell

The District 10 diving championships are set for Friday and Saturday at McDowell Intermediate High School's pool. The girls event takes place Friday starting at 6:30 p.m., while the boys are scheduled for Saturday starting at 11:30 a.m.

A new, one-round, six-dive format will be featured to follow the PIAA's new championship guidelines, which reduce the number of dives to six from 11.

In Class 2A, the top two girls and top three boys will qualify for the state meet. In 3A, one each from the girls and boys meets earns a spot at the PIAA championships. As of Wednesday evening, there were just two 3A divers entered in each the boys and girls meet. The 2A girls meet had 10 entries and the boys had three.

Swimming/diving standings: 2022-23 District 10 boys and girls swimming/diving standings

The PIAA swimming and diving championships are scheduled for March 15-18 at Bucknell University's Kinney Natatorium in Lewisburg.

Meadville's Charlie Minor (Class 3A boys) is the only diver who can defend a D-10 title as the other 2022 champions have graduated. Minor has won the past two 3A crowns.

Warren's Katie Madigan (Class 2A) and McDowell's Alexis Shelatz (3A) won in the girls competition last year. Fairview's Katie George, who finished fourth in 2A last season, could be a top diver to watch Friday.

Cathedral Prep's Vincent Kloecker took first in the boys Class 2A competition last season. The runner-up, Fairview's Aari Fox, could be one to watch Saturday.

District 10's swimming championships meet will take place March 3-4 at S.P.I.R.E. Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
