Here's what's open and what's closed in and around the area on Presidents Day

Presidents Day is celebrated Monday and is a federal holiday, meaning most government offices and courts will be closed and there will be no mail delivery.

Most banks also are closed.

Presidents Day is referred to as George Washington's birthday.

Government offices and courts

Federal offices and courts, State of Illinois offices and courts and Sangamon County offices and courts are closed Monday in observance of Presidents Day.

Illinois Secretary of State offices and driver services facilities operating on a Tuesday through Saturday schedule will be closed on Saturday. Offices and facilities operating on a Monday through Friday schedule will be closed Monday.

City of Springfield offices, including Lincoln Library and the administrative offices of Oak Ridge Cemetery, are open Monday. The city observes Abraham Lincoln's birthday, which was marked last Monday, as a holiday.

Schools

District 186 schools and offices are closed Monday. The board of education has been moved to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The board meets at 1900 W. Monroe St.

There are no classes at Midwest Technical Institute on Presidents Day, but offices are open.

The University of Illinois SpringfieldLincoln Land Community College, Illinois College and Blackburn College are all open and are in session Monday.

Sangamon Mass Transit District

Sangamon Mass Transit District buses will run regular schedules Monday.

Tourist attractions

Tourist attractions like the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum and the Lincoln Home National Historic Site are open regular hours Monday.

Ben Crump in Springfield

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump will address the Lincoln-Douglass Freedom Fund Banquet, sponsored by the Springfield branch of the NAACP, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 3000 S. Dirksen Pkwy., at 2:45 p.m. Sunday.

Crump is representing the family and estate of Earl L. Moore Jr., the victim of a Dec. 18 homicide in Springfield, in a wrongful death lawsuit.

ALA birthday banquet

Author and political insider Sidney Blumenthal will headline the Abraham Lincoln Association Birthday Banquet at the downtown President Abraham Lincoln Hotel, 701 E. Adams St., at 7 p.m. on Sunday.

Blumenthal's five-volume biography, "The Political Life of Abraham Lincoln," is nearing completion with the last two books, covering 1860 to 1865, on their way. Blumenthal's talk in Springfield will address the yet-to-be-published works.

The author of "The Clinton Wars," Blumenthal was an assistant and senior advisor to President Bill Clinton and senior advisor to Hillary Clinton.

Benjamin P. Thomas Symposium

The Benjamin P. Thomas Symposium will be held beginning at 10 a.m. at the President Abraham Lincoln Hotel, 701 E. Adams St., on Sunday.

The luncheon speaker is author Terry Alford ("In the Houses of Their Dead"). Other presenters include Michael Green, Edward Achorn and Jonathan W. White. Historian and author Michael Burlingame, the Naomi B. Lynn Distinguished Chair in Lincoln Studies at the University of Illinois Springfield, will moderate a roundtable discussion beginning at 2:15 p.m.

All authors will be signing their books beginning at 3 p.m.
