Here's where your children can eat free this summer in San Angelo

Second-grade students select their meals during lunch break in the cafeteria at an elementary school in Scottsdale, Ariz. On Friday, Feb. 3, 2023, U.S. agriculture officials proposed new nutrition standards for school meals, including the first-ever limits on added sugars, with a focus on sweetened foods such as cereals, yogurt, flavored milk and breakfast pastries.

With one program ending soon, others are beginning. Here's where you kids can eat for free this summer in and around San Angelo.

Betty Teston, outreach specialist with the Baylor Collaborative on Hunger and Poverty, said their office in San Angelo is one of the town's "best kept secret." They are located at 502 S Koenigheim Street, Suite 3C.

"We've been in town for years, but nobody really knows what we have going on," Teston said. "We work with coalitions in town, do blessing boxes, food drives... we work with organizations and collaborate together to try and fill those needs in our community for folks who are hungry."

Teston said they are currently trying to increase participation of summer meal programs in town.

There are various programs going on in and around San Angelo to feed children this summer, including San Angelo Independent School Districts program, Kids Eat Free, Lighthouse Kids Summer Meals and more.

"Lots of programs are proving these meals, and parents are used to their kids eating breakfast and lunch at school," Teston said. "We are trying to promote these healthy meals to help out."
