At 111 deaths, a record number of people in Milwaukee County died in motor vehicle crashes in 2022, according to Wisconsin Department of Transportation crash records. Records show that 40 people in Milwaukee County have died in crashes this year, and the county's Department of Transportation says reckless driving has reached "crisis levels."

Now, the Milwaukee County DOT is hosting public information sessions, or Safe Streets Roadshows, in every municipality, inviting the community to ask questions, share ideas and speak to how reckless driving has impacted their lives.

This is the first step of "phase one" outlined in the DOT's traffic safety initiative named the Complete Communities Transportation Planning Project.

Funded by Transportation Alternatives Program grants, phase one of the project, which includes the creation of a data hub that'll identify crash "hotspots," is projected to be completed by 2024.

The first roadshows were held in Brown Deer and Greenfield on June 8, and have since been in Cudahy, Greendale and Shorewood. Residents from anywhere in Milwaukee County can attend upcoming sessions that'll take place throughout July and August.
