Here's who's running for the town council seat in Braintree's District 6

BRAINTREE − A government veteran and a first-time candidate are competing for the District 6 seat on the town council in Tuesday's election. It is the only contest among the nine town council seats.

Peter Morin, 64, who lives on Massachusetts Avenue, is running against Mark Doucette, 56, of Angela Road.

The current District 6 town councilor, Lawrence Mackin, is not seeking reelection.

Peter Morin: His top priority is fixing the budget

Morin has served in a variety of elected and appointed positions, including selectman, assessor, chief of staff to former Mayor Joseph Sullivan, and Norwell town administrator.

A lawyer, he is the interim Holbrook town administrator, a job he said he would leave if he's elected to the council. He is the chairman of Braintree's charter review committee.

"I offer the town experience with a fresh perspective. I have been away for a few years and I want to continue to contribute," he said.

His said his top priority is to "fix the budget."

"We can't continue going into our reserves to fund operational expenses," Morin said.

He said he wants to come up with a plan for renovating and replacing school buildings, and would address traffic problems in the district by adding "traffic calming" measures and increased enforcement. He said he wants to increase property tax relief for senior citizens.

Mark Doucette: Braintree is 'going in a good direction'

Doucette, a sales executive, said he would bring a wide range of business experience to the council, including construction experience gained as a carpenter and an ironworker. He has not held any local government offices.

"I think the town is going in a good direction and I want to maintain that," Doucette said.

He said he would bring a different, unbiased perspective to the council and be "a voice for the people" and not for what he called the "old guard" of the town.

Doucette said he would oppose tax increases beyond what are allowed under Proposition 2½, such as another debt exclusion to upgrade school buildings.

"I want the town to keep the same look and feel," he said.

Doucette said he is against the planned trash transfer station in Holbrook.

"I would oppose it all day long. They will drive those trucks through the Town of Braintree," he said of the transfer station.
