Here's why gas prices have gone down over the past month in Pueblo

Pueblo drivers experienced bad sticker shock earlier this year when filling up at the pump, when prices sometimes exceeded $4 per gallon.

But gas prices have fallen over the past month, by an average of approximately 70 cents in Pueblo.

The average price of gas in Pueblo is now $3.16 for a regular gallon of gas, according to AAA Colorado. That’s down from $3.30 a week ago and $3.83 a month ago.

This mirrors trends around the state and the country. Here’s why gas prices are lower and what we can expect in the coming months.

Why gas prices are lower now

There’s multiple factors that are contributing to the now-lower prices for gasoline in Colorado and around the country, according to AAA Colorado spokesperson Skyler McKinley.

One of the biggest factors is that demand tends to be lower in the winter months, as more people tend to take road trips when it’s warmer outside and days are longer.

Also, gas refineries switch to a winter blend of gasoline for colder months, which is cheaper to produce and better for engines.

What we can expect moving forward

McKinley said that drivers should expect gas prices to stay somewhat lower this winter but cautioned that there’s several factors that could affect how much we pay at the pump.

Ongoing global conflicts could affect gas prices in the U.S., just as gas prices spiked in early 2022 at the onset of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. McKinley said that prices could also rise again if another country gets involved in the current war in Palestine.

In general, McKinley said gas prices tend to remain lower in the winter and start to increase again in the spring.

How prices in Pueblo compare to other places in Colorado and the country

The average price of gas in Pueblo mirrors the statewide average of $3.16, which is slightly lower than the current national average of $3.31, data from AAA show.

Gas prices in some parts of the Denver metro area are slightly lower than in Pueblo. Gas in Adams County is currently the lowest in the state at $2.85.

Some counties in the Western Slope are pricier than the rest of the state. The average price of gas in Montrose County is $3.59, while Pitkin County has the highest average in Colorado at $4.68.
