Here’s Why Grimes and Elon Musk Just Changed Their Baby’s Name

Singer-producer Grimes and Tesla cofounder Elon Musk confused a lot of the internet when they unveiled the name of their first son, X Æ A-12 Musk, who was born on May 4. Aside from wondering about the name's meaning, people were (and still are) pretty unsure how to actually say out loud.

This week Grimes revealed in an Instagram comment that the couple has made one small change to their son's name, explaining that "X Æ A-12" is now spelled "X Æ A-Xii." Sure, that might not change the pronunciation, but Grimes revealed the change came in accordance with California law, which stipulates that baby names can't include numbers, symbols, or emoji. After Grimes posted a photo of herself on Sunday, May 24, fans asked whether the singer had changed the name. Grimes replied by writing "X Æ A-Xii," later adding: "Roman numerals. Looks better tbh."

After their son was born, Grimes broke the name's meaning down on Twitter. "X," she said, is meant in the context of "x" as an unknown variable, while "Æ" stands for "artificial intelligence." The second "A" was inspired by "Archangel," one of her favorite songs, and she noted "A-12" was her favorite aircraft as well. "No weapons, no defenses, just speed. Great in battle, but non-violent," she said. Well, they definitely get points for one of the most inventive baby names we've heard so far.

Musk later went on the Joe Rogan podcast a few days after X Æ A-Xii was born and said that Grimes thought up the first part of the name, while he'd added "A-12." He also explained how to say it, noting, "It's just X, the letter X. And then the Æ is, like, pronounced 'ash.' And then A-12 is my contribution… Archangel-12, the precursor to the SR-71, coolest plane ever." If it's still not totally clear, you can hear him say it in the video below.

I guess that's that on that.
