Here’s Why Lori Loughlin Probably Won’t Go to Jail for the College Bribery Scandal
Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman were just named in an indictment with more than 50 people who allegedly participated in a college admissions bribery scandal.
A legal expert just weighed in on whether they could serve jail time.
After the news broke today that Full House’s Lori Loughlin and Desperate Housewives starFelicity Huffman were among the 50 people allegedly involved in a college admissions bribery scandal, people immediately started to wonder whether they would face any jail time.
Legal expert James Leonard Jr. spoke with People about whether the people involved would spend time behind bars or not, and he said that while it’s a possibility, it’s not super likely.
“This is a federal prosecution brought forth by the Department of Justice that carries with it potential life-altering consequences for those involved. The stakes could not be higher,” he said.
“A custodial term is always a possibility when you are charged with felonies. The question to ask is if it’s a probability, and in this case, I don’t see it as a probability with respect to the parents involved.”
Huffman is accused of giving $15,000 “to participate in the college entrance exam cheating scheme on behalf of her oldest daughter,” per the indictment, and Loughlin is accused of paying $500,000 to have her daughters designated as recruits to the USC crew team even though neither of them row crew.
So basically, what Leonard is saying is that the parents involved in this scandal are less at-risk for jail time than those running the scandal. Per earlier reports, one man in California was allegedly behind the entire thing.
“At the end of the day, we are talking about parents who tried to help their children,” Leonard said, “and crossed the line in doing so.”
