Herkimer men, MV women advance, play again Friday in NJCAA soccer

HERKIMER - The Mohawk Valley Community College Hawks, serving as the de facto home team for the NJCAA's Division III women's soccer tournament at Herkimer College's Wehrum Stadium, earned a spot in Friday's semifinals with a 7-1 win Wednesday's quarterfinal nightcap.

The Herkimer men, playing on the road for their national tournament for the first time since 2008, also won in quarterfinal play at Genesee Community College.

Mohawk Valley, Brookhaven, Delta back in women's semifinals

The unbeaten Hawks, seeded third, routed Rowan College of South Jersey-Gloucester 7-1 in the last of Wednesday's four matches in Herkimer. Mohawk Valley led 5-0 at halftime and got hat tricks from Central Valley Academy graduate Jazmyn Gillette and Mt. Markham High School graduate Amber Piersma, each with an assist in addition to her three goals. Former Poland Tornado Lexi Bates scored the other goal.

Hannah Pcola, another Mt. Markham graduate, made seven saves and allowed a single goal in the 64th minute.

Mohawk Valley (15-0-0) plays No. 2 Delta College (15-1-2) in Friday's 6:30 p.m. semifinal. Delta was a 13-0 winner Wednesday against Bristol Community College

Delta defeated Mohawk Valley 5-1 in a spring semifinal on its way to winning the national championship for the 2020-21 academic year.

The early semifinal pits No. 1 Dallas College-Brookhaven (14-0-1), the No. 1 seed and defending champion, against No. 4 Genesee Community College (10-3-2). Genesee won a penalty kick shootout Wednesday after playing Ocean County College to a scoreless overtime tie; the Cougars converted on their first four penalty kicks and won the shootout 4-2 after being outshot 13-7 in regulation and 17-12 overall.

Brookhaven defeated Mohawk Valley 3-1 in last fall's semifinals. The Hawks beat Genesee 4-2 at home Oct. 20.

Top seeds advance at men's tournament

In Batavia, Herkimer's second-seeded Generals got two goals and an assist from Suntaro Morimoto and two goals from Proctor High School graduate Ali Somow in a 7-1 in over Raritan Valley Community College. Tamato Fujishima contributed three assists, and Nicjlas Kamfjord, Aseong Choi and Rory Fisher each scored one goal.

Herkimer goalie Cathal Carney made five saves and did not allow a goal before checking out with a 6-0 lead; Canastota High School graduate Jonathan Bovair played then final 30 minutes.

The Generals' opponent for Friday's 6:30 p.m. semifinal will be Region III rival and No. 3 seed Genesee Community College, a 5-0 winner Wednesday over Anne Arundel Community College.

Herkimer (14-0-1) defeated Genesee (13-3-3) 2-0 Oct. 5 in Herkimer.

The men's other seminal has Dallas College-Richland (14-0-1), the No. 1 seed and defending champion, squaring off against No. 4 Camden County College (14-2-0). Richland beat Community College of Rhode Island 5-0 in Wednesday's opener and Camden County was a 3-2 winner against Suffolk County Community College.
