Hermés Birkin Bag Sells For Over £160,000 In London Auction
A Hermés Birkin bag has sold for over £160,000 at a London auction, exceeding its predicted sales of £70-90,000.
During the auction at Christies’s, the 2015 Himalaya niloticus crocodile Birkin 35 sold for an impressive £162,500, but it wasn’t the only bag to sell for more than expected. A 2007 Hermés ficelle porous crocodile Birkin sold for £118,750, despite being estimated at £50,000-70,000.
The iconic Birkin bag was named after the legend Jane Birkin, after she sat next to Hermés chief executive, Jean-Louis Dumas, on a flight from Paris to London in 1983.
Rachel Koffsky, head of sales at Christie’s, explained to the Guardian that auctions are growing in popularity: “As awareness grows regarding the variety of pieces on the secondary market, as well as the breadth of price points, the benefits of collecting at auction become apparent.”
“This coupled with the awareness of sustainability, as consumers looks for ways to collect and shop with a reduced impact on the environment.”
Pieces created by the late Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel were also up for auction, with a 2017 Chanel crystal rocket ship evening bag selling for £21,250 and a 2010 amethyst alligator bag selling for £18,750.
The renowned designer died in February this year, after 36 years at the helm of the fashion house.
