Herm Edwards' future at ASU football coach questioned ahead of Territorial Cup vs. Arizona

Will Herm Edwards be coaching his last regular season game for Arizona State when the Sun Devils host the Arizona Wildcats in the Territorial Cup on Saturday?

Some college football writers believe so.

They have speculated about the ASU football coach's job security since the team's ugly loss to Oregon State last week.

Edwards' team is 7-4 overall and 5-3 in Pac-12 play this season in a season where many thought the Sun Devils would possibly win the Pac-12 title.

Edwards is 24-17 in four seasons in Tempe.

Check out what college football writers and media personalities are saying about the Arizona State coach's future in stories and on social media.

San Jose Mercury News: 75% chance ASU football has a head coaching vacancy

Jon Wilner writes: "The four-loss Sun Devils have struggled to execute consistently on the field as they await the outcome of the NCAA investigation into alleged recruiting transgressions. They have one victory over a ranked opponent and thus far haven’t come close to making the competitive leap they sought when Edwards took over. In fact, his winning percentage in conference games is worse than that of his predecessor, Todd Graham, over an equivalent span. We continue to believe a change is more likely than not, either because Edwards decides to retire or is forced out. Recruiting is in the gutter because of the threat of sanctions, and a barrage of players could transfer out as soon as the season ends. Essentially, the program is frozen in place waiting for Edwards or the NCAA or both. What a mess."

Matt Zemek writes: "ASU President Michael Crow can look around at the Pac-12 and see all the programs falling short of their potential. His program is one of them. If he can’t realize how valuable ASU football is, and if he doesn’t move swiftly to terminate both Edwards and athletic director Ray Anderson, one wonders what it would take to get him to act. USC fans hope Crow is either paralyzed with indecision or bored to tears, anything which would prevent him from making the obvious and necessary decision to clean house in the Valley of the Sun Devils."

Sports Illustrated: Herm Edwards' job security under scrutiny

Donnie Druin writes: "The overall atmosphere surrounding the Sun Devils football program is cloudy. There's no expected date for when the NCAA may conclude its investigation. Recruiting looks as grim as ever, and Arizona State is trending downwards on the field after displaying so much promise earlier in the year. The temperature on Edwards' seat is unknown at the moment, although when putting the pieces of the puzzle together, you'd figure it's at least uncomfortable. Time will tell if Edwards can salvage anything of this season, or if the decision-makers at Arizona State even believe he needs to salvage anything. However, in the court of public opinion, Edwards should be on his way out."

Andrew Doughty writes: "Edwards is just 24-17, including 16-14 in the Pac-12. And throughout four years of mediocrity, Anderson has refused to comment on his friend’s job security, nor has he voiced concerns about missing “major bowl games,” as he did four years ago in justifying paying Graham $12.8 million to go away, or suggested Edwards’ future could be in jeopardy as the program faces an NCAA investigation."

247 Sports: Edwards could be out at Arizona State soon

Collin Kennedy writes: "In December of 2017, Arizona State's hiring of the former NFL head coach and television analyst turned heads. After the first few years, Herm Edwards looked like a tremendous hire with a great long-term vision. Edwards led the Sun Devils to a 7-6 and 8-5 record in his first two seasons with two bowl appearances and one bowl win. However, 2020 put Edwards into question. Numerous recruiting violations during the pandemic and allegations of a toxic culture led to an NCAA investigation. There's a belief he might be out before the hammer is dropped."
