Hero Hustle 5k Walk/Run to help veterans

NEWCOMERSTOWN − The sixth annual Hero Hustle 5k Walk/Run is scheduled for April 29 to honor military men and women in local communities. Participants should arrive between 8:20 a.m. and 8:40 a.m. to pick up a race shirt with proof of service. The event will include a timed color run.

The event is hosted by #orangeandblackgetfit and Operation Veterans Helping Veterans. All proceeds will go directly to support veterans and the #orangeandblackgetfit team in order to continue both non-profit programs. Veterans participate for free; others will pay $30. The shirts-only cost is $25. To recognize a specific veteran, a name can be added to the back of the shirt for $10. To register or to add a name, call 740-294-1378. The deadline is April 14. Online registration is March 1 to April 22.

The opening ceremony will be at 8:45 a.m. at Cy Young Park with the Newcomerstown American Legion and Operation Veterans Helping Veterans. The walk/run begins at 9 a.m. An awards presentation will be at 10 a.m for the top three male, female and under-15 categories.

Free shows

Chris Hart of Newcomerstown will bring history to life with several upcoming free programs at the New Philadelphia Public Library.

At 6:30 p.m. March 15, Hart will present “Baseball’s Cyclone,” a first-person portrayal of Denton “Cy” Young during the early days of Major League Baseball.

At 6:30 p.m. March 1, Hart will present “Riding the Rough Rails,” which is described as “Some may call him a bum, a tramp or a hobo, but when you meet Professor Joe, you will see he is a true Knight of the Rails.”

At 6:30 p.m. April 5, Hart will portray Harry Hawk, delivering lines from the third act of “Our American Cousin” from the stage at Ford’s Theatre. Hart will present a look at lives of the actors and crew, before and after the assassination.

Weaving memories

Lois Merrill of Newcomerstown, an art therapist, will instruct a class on picture frame weaving for the Hospice of Guernsey at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the hospice office, 9711 East Pike Road in Cambridge.

Frames will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring fabric that reminds them of loved ones, and such items as yarn, buttons, pins and earrings.

The workshop is free and open to the public. Anyone who has experienced a loss is encouraged to attend.

Bowl for Kids’ Sake

Bowl for Kids’ Sake in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Central Ohio will be noon to 2 p.m. and 2 to 4 p.m. March 11 at Cy Young Lanes, 930 Mill Alley.

Heather Stein-Wells of the Newcomerstown Fire Department visited the Newcomerstown East Elementary recently to talk to students about fire safety and give a look at a fire suit worn by firefighters. With a donation from Light in the Valley ministries, the school was able to send students home with a ready-to-install smoke detector.
