Herschel Walker acknowledges sending a $700 check to his ex-girlfriend but says he didn't know it would be used for an abortion

Pro-life Republican Georgia Senate candidate Herschel Walker has acknowledged in a new interview that he sent a $700 check to an ex-girlfriend but denied the woman's allegation that he knew it would be used for an abortion.

"This is still a lie because she is the mother of my child," Walker told NBC News in an interview that aired Monday on the "Today" show when confronted about the matter.

When Walker was presented with a copy of the $700 check during the interview, he confirmed that it was his check after taking a closer look with glasses on.

"Yes, that's my check," the former football star said. "It doesn't matter whether it is my signature or not."

Walker added, "I have no idea what that can be for."

NBC News said it had obtained a copy of the check and the receipt from a Georgia medical center where the woman says the abortion took place.

Earlier this month, the mother of one of Walker's children spoke out, claiming that Walker urged her to get an abortion in 2009 and that he reimbursed her for it when she had the procedure. The Daily Beast first reported on the claim.

The woman also claimed that Walker asked her to have another abortion just two years later.

Walker has repeatedly denied the woman's claims.

"It's a lie," Walker told NBC News during the new interview.

When asked about possibly reaching out to the woman, Walker said, "Why should I? Why do I need to?"

"Voters should believe me because I have been very transparent about everything I've ever done," said Walker.

Walker's campaign did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment on Monday.

A controversial candidacy

Walker's bid to unseat Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock remains a close contest, with pollsters at FiveThirtyEight showing Warnock with a slight edge in the Peach State.

Walker made headlines during their debate on October 15 by flashing an honorary police badge that he said proves he's worked closely with law enforcement. Warnock teed-up the viral moment by accusing Walker of having pretended to be a police officer, a claim the Atlanta Journal-Constitution deemed false.

Walker has also been accused of lying by his son, Christian Walker.

The 23-year-old conservative culture warrior unloaded on Herschel Walker after news broke about the three other children the NFL star fathered out of wedlock and allegations that he paid for an abortion in 2009.

"Family values people — he has four kids, four different women. Wasn't in the house raising one of them," Christian Walker wrote online, adding, "He was out having sex with other women."

MAGA world has, at least so far, looked past the mushrooming scandals and towards reclaiming control of the 50-50 Senate.

"They know they are on the verge of losing the Senate, and they know Herschel Walker is winning, so they have cranked up the smear machine," Republican Sen. Rick Scott of Florida said in a statement backing Trump's preferred candidate amid all the turmoil. 

Scott, who is running Senate Republicans' re-election arm this cycle, recently joined Walker on the campaign trail. Likely 2024 presidential contender Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas also lent Walker his support.
