Hershberger Counseling opens in Coldwater

Hershberger Counseling, at 354 Marshall St., Coldwater, was recently welcomed with a Coldwater Area Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting. But Lorie Hershberger, MA, licensed professional counselor, isn’t really new to town.

In 2016, Hershberger opened her practice at the current location with Christine Hill-Melton, a psychologist, who has since retired.

Hershberger considered relocating, then decided to buy the building. Her clients knew the place. She liked the building. It just seemed perfect.

And it is almost perfect except there are two office spaces available that she’d like to rent. The walls are sound proof to insure confidentiality and while she’d welcome another therapist, she'd be equally welcoming to any professional needing an office space.

As for Hershberger's path to becoming a counselor and now being in Coldwater — that has been a journey.

Quite literally a journey across the country, following a corporate path, both for her and her husband, Paul Hershberger.

“In my other life, I was a registered nurse,” Hershberger said.

While working as an RN at the Belmont Hospital in Philadelphia in the women’s treatment unit for eating disorders, the therapist gave her a stack of books and said, “You are a therapist, not a nurse.”

Hershberger said, “I wanted to be a therapist ever since I was in seventh grade, but I just didn’t.”

When the therapist wasn't able to lead sessions, she'd entrust the group to Hershberger.

One thing led to another, and to another state, where she graduated from Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Va. in 1998. Along the way, she gained experience with addiction counseling.

Their next move was to Texas where she gained experience with adolescence addictions before opening her own practice.

About that time Hershberger started learning from Pia Mellody, a nationally-known “therapeutic genius.”

“Pia really changed me and changed what I do,” Hershberger said.

With that extensive background, she is now settled in Coldwater.
