Hex Coffee’s new space will open soon at Camp North End in Charlotte

Hex Coffee, Kitchen and Natural Wines opens April 18 at its new, larger spot in Camp North End.

The full-service restaurant’s menu will focus on Japanese-inspired meals and popular items from Hex’s other restaurant concept, Stable Hand, such as porridge bowls. Hex and Good Bottle Co. opened Stable Hand three years ago on Remount Road in South End.

“We’re trying to mix things that we love about fine dining into coffee culture,” said Charlotte native Chandler Wrenn, who founded Hex with Tanner Morita eight years ago as a popup. “We’ve been thinking about that since Day One.”

Other features coming to the new restaurant include an open cafe area with seating for 65, along with outdoor seating and space for events.

THE FOOD: Chef Obediah Rysztak, formerly of Stable Hand and VANA, will lead the kitchen team. The food has been inspired by Morita’s Japanese-Hawaiian upbringing.

The all-day cafe’s menu will include:

  • Rice porridge with pork belly

  • Charred cabbage

  • Miso cured egg yolk

  • Katsu sando with panko pork cutlet

  • Shredded cabbage and Japanese mustard on brioche

  • Spam musubi with seared teriyaki spam, rice and nori.

THE COFFEE: At the coffee bar, in addition to a full coffee menu, take-home brews, including craft instant coffee, will be available for purchase.

WHAT ELSE: Signature mocktails and natural wines will be available.

ABOUT THE CAFE: The space was designed by Southwick Architecture + Interiors.

HOURS: Initially, the cafe will be open Tuesday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Camp North End growth

The opening of the new 2,700-square-foot Hex restaurant — originally set for late 2022 — had been pushed back to wait for equipment to arrive, among other delays. The new location is part of Phase II of the Camp North End development, which includes the adaptive reuse of 201 Camp Road and 701 Keswick Ave.

In the past year, Camp North End has seen quite a bit of change. Plans for four new BayHaven restaurants to join Leah & Louise at the development have since been tabled, but several other businesses have opened and more are on the way.

In August, NoDa Company Canteen opened near the Boileryard at the Raceway Building, 1824 Statesville Ave., Suite 100, serving frozen drinks and slushies, along with other beverages and snacks. Rent EBoards also opened a one-stop shop that month for personal electric vehicles, including electric skateboards, electric bikes and one-wheels at 1701 N. Graham St., Suite 114.

Coming up next — also at the 201 Camp Road building where Hex is opening — SkillPop will start in-person classes and workshops. The lessons will be available on Wednesdays and Thursdays, starting Feb. 22, and spaces in every class will be reserved for Camp North End tenants.

Custom hat retailer Fitteds CLT moved from Uptown to Camp North End’s building at 701 Keswick Ave. Also on its way to the Keswick Avenue building is Seemingly Overzealous, a dairy-free ice cream shop.

Another business targeting a spring opening in the Keswick District is a new concept called Room Service, from the co-owner of Camp North End’s Black Moth Bars. Room Service will feature cocktails, beer and wine, along with daytime sandwiches and a rotating menu of shared plates in the evening. It will team up to sell specialty items with its next door neighbor, an upscale market called Stay Inn.
