No one can deny the cultural dominance of HGTV, or the far-reaching appeal of its superstars, but before Joanna and Chip Gaines gave us relationship goals and Drew and Jonathan Scott double-teamed the real estate market, there was Scott McGillivray.

The Canadian handyman turned television personality appeared on Debbie Travis’ Facelift and From the Ground Up, and made such an impression that he landed his own mega-hit show in 2008. On Income Property, the licensed contractor and real estate pro helped homeowners buy and renovate properties to turn into rental units. It was an idea that captured the zeitgeist but was also based in reality: Expanding on research done for a college project, McGillivray turned the concept of purchasing income properties into a successful business model by the time he was 23.

When Income Property went off the air in 2016, McGillivray continued to appear on television, in specials like HGTV Canada’s Moving the McGillivrays, in which he and his family embarked on building their dream home, and shows like 2018’s Buyers Bootcamp, which was basically Income Property through the lens of Shark Tank: McGillivray partnered with homeowners to renovate and flip houses. The fate of that show seems to still be up in the air; HGTV subsidiary DIY Network has yet to release a date for season two.

But don’t worry too much about the perfectly quaffed home improvement guru. McGillivray recently teamed up with a Canadian bank and has been keeping busy executive producing and starring in his own web series called Scott’s House Call, now in its fourth season, in which he helps fans with a problem in exchange for a home-cooked meal (think Dijon salmon, moussaka, and hamburger cupcakes). It’s adorable!

On top of public engagements, he’s also CEO of McGillivray Group and McGillivray Entertainment, co-founder of real estate investing education company Keyspire, and—who isn’t these days?—a social media influencer with more than a million followers. He’s also an ambassador for Habitat for Humanity and a product designer (though that seems to be confined to a single bathroom vanity), and he just launched a property management and investment firm. So it seems like the years are treating Scott McGillivray just fine.
