HEY, WILLIE! Meaningful games in December for the Jaguars? What's Tony Boselli thinking?

HEY, WILLIE!

On the radio, I heard Tony Boselli say, “I expect the Jags to be playing meaningful games in December.”

The implication was “meaningful to the league.” But since he is a company man, possibly he was finessing the question and meant “meaningful to the Jags.” If a team is winless, every game is big!

Also, people sure still have confidence in Trevor Lawrence. I'm the outlier on that, and outliers usually lose their bets. I'd be glad to lose, too, since the Jags deserve a break or three.

HEY, JOEL!

Research Alert!

It appears the Jags will reach December with 11 games behind them and six remaining. Given the recent history of the saggy AFC South, the Jags would have to defy the laws of physics to be mathematically eliminated from the playoffs by December.

Things just HAVE to get better, right?

Now a dose of practicality: Since Vegas is now in play with the NFL, in every way Vegas plays, and since every American family has at least one family member (cough-two-cough) with a gambling app and itchy trigger thumb, there’s no such thing as an unimportant football game.

In fact, before Labor Day, if so inclined, you can go ahead and lose the rent on Fresno State-Cal Poly.

Finally, I have a hard time believing Trevor Lawrence won’t be a quality NFL quarterback. Hell, maybe even in Jacksonville.

Maybe.

HEY, WILLIE!

I saw that the NCAA is asking the U.S. Congress to pass legislation to fix the NIL, transfer portal and athletes’ rights problems. Isn’t this the stupidest sports idea you have ever heard of?

DON

HEY, DON!

Probably not the dumbest, but  remember, I've paid plenty of attention to college athletics over the years — with an occasional look-in on Congress, so I've seen some things.

HEY, WILLIE!

One of my favorite songs is “Pony Time” by Chubby Checker, which was released in 1961. That’s when I first heard the phrase boogity-boogity-boogity.

“The Streak” didn’t come along until 1974.

So, even though the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame hasn't, let's give Chubby Checker his due.

TERRY

HEY, TERRY!

I wasn’t looking for a chronological throw-down, just pointing out where Darrell Waltrip said he found the inspiration — which was Ray Stevens’ “The Streak.”

Chubby, of course, added some flair: “Boogity-boogity-boogity, shoo.” Nope, they don’t write ’em like that anymore.

And say hey to all the folks at the Chubby Checker Appreciation Society.

HEY, WILLIE!

What was Stephen Ross thinking? He got caught tampering with Tom Brady, got fined and his Dolphins have lost draft picks.

If he kept his wits about him, he would have just groped Brady and he might have gotten him to jump ship, and the league would have done practically nothing.

FRED

HEY, FRED!

Let’s move along . . .

HEY, WILLIE!

I would like to ask the question, what ever happened to “tie goes to the runner” in a baseball game?

DORIS

HEY, DORIS!

Nowadays a tie probably goes to the replay booth. And then, hopefully, the runner.

Back in saner times, youngsters learned “tie goes to the runner” about two years before they learned “i before e, except after c.”

HEY, WILLIE!

A golfer’s tee shot veers off the fairway and ends up 10 feet behind a giant oak tree. He tries to hook his recovery shot around the trouble but catches the tree squarely, and the ball ricochets and drops the man dead on the spot.

A few minutes later, he’s at the Pearly Gates. St. Peter notices his golf clubs and says, “I see you’re a golfer. Are you any good?”

The golfer replies, “I got here in two, didn’t I?”

BRAD

HEY, BRAD!

Since we’ve yet to find a rim shot that converts to print, I’ll just say thanks, and keep ’em coming.
