HEY, WILLIE! Thanks for that pick of Alabama over Tennessee

HEY, WILLIE!

I appreciate your pick of Alabama over Tennessee. Thanks.

What a game! It’s the happiest this Rocky Topper has been in a long time.

G.M.

HEY, G!

Worked like a charm, didn’t it?

Keep in mind, your Vols play Georgia in a few weeks. If you’re nice to me, I’ll make sure to pick the Dawgs in that one.

Of course the goal posts come down after beating Alabama.

HEY, WILLIE!

I retired in 2018 and relocated to southern Putnam County. I’ve recently begun to take fishing seriously.

Having said this, I stumbled on to your excellent article (Oct. 14) by accident this morning. I simply wanted to say what a fabulously colorful, positive, and upbeat writing style you possess.

I shall be “tuning in” regularly now to update myself on who’s catching what, where. Also to remind myself that despite the subject matter of any article, there remain journalists such as yourself who still know how to write in a creative and entertaining manner, and avoid the “doom prophecy” which has become so rampant in today’s journalism world.

PHIL IN WELAKA

HEY, PHIL!

Gotta say, it’s easier to be upbeat when discussing the fishing exploits of others.

If you’re ever in the mood for “doom prophecy,” let me know and I’ll send you details of my own angling adventures. You’ll soon learn why I call it “casting” and not “fishing.”

HEY, WILLIE!

I enjoyed your column (Oct. 14) about the NFL’s overreach in protecting the players.

To paraphrase Sir Isaac Newton’s Third Law of Motion, “For every action there is an equal and opposite (over) reaction!”

DON

HEY, DON!

The current onslaught of roughing-the-passer penalties is almost enough to make you miss the old “in the grasp” days of QB protection.

Almost.

HEY, WILLIE!

You and Troy Aikman both have brain damage. The bigger picture is the thousands of kids playing the game.

Parents need assurance the kids are safe. “Walk it off” training and rough play during games should be monitored by medical personnel with no special interest in which side wins.

MARK

HEY, MARK!

Oops, forgot the universal default position: “It’s all about the kids!!!”

Not in this case, Mark. It’s about flag-happy officials, as instructed by the league (you have to assume), determining the outcomes of games with lots of money at stake.

Speaking of which . . .

HEY, WILLIE!

Your excellent take on the NFL overstepping got my attention.

Quick discretionary pulls of star players could very well lead to nefariousness. In a multi-billion-dollar gambling industry, what's to keep someone in authority who has malevolent intentions from altering the outcome of a game?

SW

HEY, S!

Gee thanks, now I won’t sleep tonight.
