SAULT STE. MARIE — Hiawatha Skating Club will host its 20th annual Christmas gala this weekend at Pullar stadium.

Sault residents will have a chance to see a once a year Christmas themed figure skating show to help the local community.

For 20 years, Hiawatha Skating Club has performed for Sault Ste. Marie to help collect funds and food items for the less fortunate. Every year local people come to Pullar stadium to watch the performance, and along the way raise support for Salvation Army and other groups.

The Hiawatha Skating Club will present their 70th annual Silver Blades Revue, “Skater’s Choice,” on Saturday, March 19 and Sunday, March 20, at the Pullar Stadium. On Wednesday afternoon, some of the younger skaters had a little fun before they got down to business and practiced their moves.

The price of admission into the stadium is a donation of any size of either money or non-perishable food to be donated to the local Salvation Army and food pantries. With this method, the skating club has been able to raise hundreds of dollars and lots of food for local people in need every year.

The performers also make donations of their own, performing skaters donate a toy to a child in the community to receive on Christmas.

"This is great for our kids to be able to give back at this time of year," said Jackie Killips, Hiawatha Skating Club Christmas Gala Chair. "The club, the parents, the skaters and coaches have all worked together to make it happen every year."

Between the toys, cash and food donations, this program helps to impact dozens of families every year throughout Chippewa County.

The performance is called Angels on Ice and is heavily influenced by Christmas themes. The 45 performing skaters worked with their coaches to each choose their own Christmas themed routine and song to celebrate the season and show off their skills.

The Hiawatha Skating Club has members of ages from up to 18 years old and holds performances throughout the year in Chippewa County.

The performance begins at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, at the Pullar ice rink, the price of admission is a donation of cash or food of any size.
