Hidden Gems-McGhee wins 36th Mayes Hoops Classic

MARION — Hidden Gems-McGhee of Columbus captured the 36th Mayes Community Temple Outdoor Basketball Hoops Classic in July at Martin Luther King Park. Eight teams competed in the double elimination tournament.

The first four games in the tourney were all decided at the buzzer. Team Shorty of Mansfield beat Whoops United of Marion 62-41 as the locals settled for third place. Team Shorty then beat Hidden Gems-McGhee 54-47 to force a winner-take-all championship game between the two squads.

Like the first four games of the tournament, it came down to the final buzzer with Hidden Gems-McGhee earning a 57-55 victory for the title. Kaylam Gilbert of Hidden Gems was the tournament MVP after scoring 26 points in the finale. Trae Wilson had 16 points for Team Shorty.

Richard Hughes of Toledo was named the outstanding official of the tournament.
