There are a lot of cool things out there that make us wonder — do they really work? In our I Tried It series, we set out to use them in the real world and have determined that, in fact, they really do.

Sanah Faroke, a semi-active human whose personal attempts at drinking water aren’t enough to save her from dehydration

The Brief

Drinking water daily has become more and more of a priority for me as I’ve gotten older and actually invested in taking care of my body and health. I once replaced water with caffeine — I’m talking a Gilmore Girls/“I need coffee in an IV” type of lifestyle. I soon realized that although I was going to the bathroom far too often (yes, caffeine does that to you), I wasn’t hydrated at all.

I tried to trick myself into drinking water through a straw and I even discovered Plant Nanny, an app that entices you to drink water by feeding a digitally animated plant every time you take in a tall glass of water. Spoiler alert: neither truly helped.

That's when I decided I need a smart water bottle in my life and tried the HidrateSpark 3, which reminds me to drink water before I’m actually thirsty, using a gentle glow and a notification on my phone. Because if dehydrating myself was a sport, I would win a gold medal. For me, if something is out of sight, it’s out of mind. That’s why I keep the water bottle right on my desk and go about my day, drinking water as often as it nudges me to (and also whenever I feel thirsty, of course).

With the app, it jots down my personal parameters — from my sex, to my height, to activity level — in order to gauge how much liquid I should drink, and it glows when I’m behind on my water-drinking schedule. It also documents my progress, so I don’t feel upset over something like a dead (digital) plant. It’s practically like a momager, but for my water intake — and I do love a product that’ll remind me to do something good for myself!

The bottle has a soft-grip design, which makes it easy to hold and take with me to the gym and around the office. Plus, the soft glow has three different styles ranging from low to high, so it doesn’t disturb my colleagues.

While some people “forget” to eat when they get busy (TBH, this NEVER happens to me since my day revolves around my meals), I however tend to forget to drink water until my tongue is literally SpongeBob-out-of-water dry. The HidrateSpark 3’s proactive reminders keep me ahead of my thirst-quenching needs because at that point, once you’re thirsty, you’re already dehydrated.

And with dehydration comes the headaches and fatigue. I’ve also noticed that when I’m mildly dehydrated, my skin isn’t as clear as it can be and my mood definitely feels a shift. Trust me, my spicy side definitely comes out real quick.

I get hangry when I don’t eat for too long, and in the same way, I get irritable when I’m too thirsty. The HidrateSpark 3 prevents me from going into that deep, dark zone, bringing out a happy and hydrated Sanah. And I think it’s good for everyone involved.

The Closing Argument

By implementing the HidrateSpark 3 into my life, I’ve created a way to make sure that I’m staying on my game by keeping myself healthy, energized, and hydrated. If you don’t drink enough water or your pee isn’t as clear as it should be, this smart water bottle is the only one of its kind that’ll lovingly tell you to drink up!
