High demerits issued, fruit flies found in Tarrant County restaurant health inspections

Five restaurants received high demerit scores and one restaurant had a pest issue in the latest Tarrant County health inspections, according to city data. No restaurants were closed.

There were 164 inspections from April 16 to April 29.

Tarrant County Public Health inspects and scores all restaurants in Tarrant County except for those located in Fort Worth, Arlington, Euless and North Richland Hills. Scores are based on a demerit system. When the total exceeds 29, a follow-up inspection is required. A score of zero is perfect.

Five restaurants received over 29 demerits:

  • Totally Tea at 736 W. Pipeline Road in Hurst, 40

  • Mulan Japanese Kitchen at 6548 Lake Worth Blvd. Suite 200 in Lake Worth, 35

  • Tortas Y Tacos Estilo Hidalgo at 5155 River Oaks Blvd. in River Oaks, 32

  • Armends Italian Restaurant at 2315 E. Southlake Blvd. Suite 101 in Southlake, 29

  • Rice Xpress at 6063 Lake Worth Blvd., 29

Six restaurants had follow-up inspections, including Mulan Japanese Kitchen, which then received a score of 17. The others were:

  • Jackie Hartnett Concessions at 3595 County Road 424 in Cleburne, with a followup score of 4.

  • Popeyes at 1100 Airport Freeway Suite in Bedford.

  • Waffle House at 3764 Cheek Sparger Road in Bedford, 6

  • Crispy Chicken Seafood at 5700 Denton Highway in Haltom City.

  • Tacos Los Compadres at 1024 E. Harvey Ave.

The Popeyes location had two follow-up inspections but was not able to reopen due to fryers not being clean and grease buildup, according to the inspection data.

The Waffle House location had multiple follow-ups due to a fire, but was cleared to reopen.

Fruit flies were “out of control” at Boston Market located at 494 Grapevine Highway in Hurst, according to the inspection data. Fruit flies were also observed in a fruit pie for sale at the restaurant. The restaurant was ordered to work with pest control to gain control of the fruit flies. The pie slice with a fruit fly in it was discarded. The restaurant had multiple repeat violations, including rust and mold in the ice machine. Restaurant staff were told not to use the ice machine until cleared by a health inspector.

Insect droppings were observed in cabinets and on counter tops near sinks in a concession stand at Crowley Ninth Grade Campus. The school district was told its pest control applicator needs to treat the concession stand.

Stop N Save at 5001 River Oaks Blvd. in River Oaks requires re-inspection for multiple violations, including a need to fix the prep cooler, according to the report.
