The Goldbacks kicked off a stretch of seven games in seven days. They will finish the season playing nine games in 10 days.

“One at a time," Newburgh coach Scott Seabury said on the stretch. "That’s the best strategy I can say. We’ll get tomorrow, tomorrow. We’ll worry about today, today. We have a decent amount of depth with the pitching. We had a junior varsity player come in today to close it out. And that’s what we’re going to do, we’re just going to roll with whoever is fresh and whoever is available.”

Tyler Cross opened the scoring with a two-out, two-run single to left-center-field, plating John Ahearn and Nick Schmidt in the second inning.

Dylan Iorlano led off the third inning with a walk and then stole second base. His gritty play would manufacture another run for the Goldbacks as Jake Lanzer drove him home. After three, the Goldbacks had a 5-0 lead. The Crusaders got three back in the bottom half of the inning. But the bats just kept contributing for Newburgh.

And on the mound, southpaw pitcher Tyler Slaughter went six strong innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits, striking out five and walking two. Catcher Roberto Reade drove home a run and came home to score twice, but put his defensive prowess and game-calling ability on display behind the dish.

Logan Voltaire made an appearance to close out the game in the seventh inning, after being called up from junior varsity.

What it means

In their only other matchup this season, the Goldbacks won, 9-4, on April 21. Tyler Slaughter earned the win in that game as well. The Goldbacks finish their season with seven games in seven days. They continue this stretch with a crossover matchup on the road against Pine Bush, at EJ Russell Elementary School at 4:15 p.m. on May 13. The Crusaders have two regular-season games left on the schedule, as they host Burke Catholic in a non-league game at 10 a.m. on May 14.

Quotable

“That’s Bert. He’s probably the best catcher in the section. No balls are getting by him. Nobody is going to run on him, because he’s going to throw people out. I didn’t call one pitch today, he called the entire game. He’s smart back there, I trust him 100 percent and he’s our team leader.” - Newburgh coach Scott Seabury on the impact of catcher Roberto Reade.

“I just think that we have a good group of guys, we have a lot of depth, and great coaching, obviously. I think the way we’re playing right now, if we continue to play like that, I see us in the playoffs, no problem, and competing for the championship. We’re excited to see what’s to come." - Newburgh's Jake Lanzer on this season's team.
