May 28—Madison Central (28-7) will take on Russell County (28-6) in the opening round the Kentucky High School Athletic Association's State Tournament on Thursday in Lexington.

Game time is set for 5 p.m. at Kentucky Proud Park.

The winner will move on to face either Owensboro Catholic or the Region 9 champion on June 4.

The Indians claimed the 11th Region title on Wednesday in Georgetown with a 4-2 win over Sayre. That victory earned the program a 12th trip to the state tournament — and the third in the past seven seasons (2015, 2018 and 2022).

The Indians didn't know who they would face in the opening round of the state tournament until Thursday night. Russell County beat Warren East, 10-5, in the 4th Region championship game, which was held at Western Kentucky University.

The Indians and Lakers have not met in more than nine years.

The last final game between the schools was on March, 31, 2013 in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.
