HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL: Model pushes win streak to five games; Indians rally in Florida

Apr. 4—Nathan Hutchinson

The Patriots (7-3) opened the season by losing three of their first five games — including a 12-2, six-inning setback on the road to Williamstown.

They haven't, however, lost since.

"It's my first year," Model Laboratory coach Sam Sutton said. "There's a lot to change. It takes a little bit to get that winning mindset."

Model Laboratory extended its winning streak to five games with a 10-3 win over Williamstown on Tuesday in Richmond. Freshman Matthew Gorbett earned the complete-game victory, allowing just six hits, one earned run and four walks, while striking out three.

The Patriots scored three times in both the fifth and sixth innings to take control.

Beckett Parker-Noblitt was 2-for-3 with two walks, an RBI and scored twice. Aaron Short was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Kellen Burchett was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Model out-hit the Demons, 9-6, and took advantage of five errors.

Garrett Holloway was 1-for-2 with a double, two walks and two RBI. Conner Sayre doubled and scored twice. Sean Singleton was 1-for-2 with a walk and scored twice.

Eli Estes walked twice and drove in a run, while Mark Thomas Ellis walked and scored once.

Model is set to return to action today at home against Bluegrass United.

Central rallies in Florida

Sam Coleman's sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning lifted Madison Central to a 4-3 win over Crestview (Fla.) on Tuesday in the Fort Walton Beach Bash.

The Indians are 3-0 on the Spring Break trip to Florida.

Keith Stewart was 2-for-4 with a double and scored a run and Bradley Poynter was 2-for-3 with an RBI as Central out-hit Crestview, 8-4.

Stewart got the start and pitched five innings, allowing four hits, three runs and four walks with two strikeouts.

Coleman earned the win in relief. He pitched two innings and struck out three while not allowing a hit, run or a walk.

Crestview had a 2-1 lead before the Indians scored twice in the sixth. The Bulldogs pulled even in the bottom of the inning, though.

In the seventh, Daniel Bauer singled, moved to second on an error, then went to third on a wild pitch. He scored on a fly ball to right field.

Cannon Spivey was 1-for-2 with a walk and scored twice. Parker Mullins was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Gunnar Rhodus was 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Central is set to return to action Wednesday in Florida against Brookville (Ohio).
