High school basketball: Beech Grove elevates assistant to interim coach for season

Joe Rihm will take over as boys basketball coach at Beech Grove for the upcoming season.

The move to elevate Rihm from assistant coach to the head coaching position was approved at the school board meeting Tuesday, Beech Grove spokesperson Mitzi Garman said. Rihm, who was on the staff for last year’s Class 3A state championship season, is the interim coach for 2022-23 and is also the school's assistant athletic director.

“(Rihm) is committed to advancing the long standing tradition of excellence that is Hornet basketball,” Garman said.

Former coach Mike Renfro resigned his position as coach following his Aug. 8 arrest in Henry County for possession of cocaine and dealing cocaine between one and five grams. Renfro is also facing misdemeanor charges for operating a vehicle while intoxicated and public intoxication.

Renfro was named Marion County coach of the year last year after leading the Hornets to their first state championship. His next court date is set for Oct. 17.
