HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Hirschi defense shuts down Burkburnett for outright 5-4A title

BURKBURNETT – Thursday night’s rivalry battle between Hirschi and Burkburnett did not begin well for the Huskies' defense. The Bulldogs hit three of their first four shots from 3-point range two minutes into the contest.

The Hirschi defense took control following a timeout, allowing the Bulldogs only two more successful shots from beyond the arc while earning a dominant 65-38 win at Danny Nix Gymnasium to secure the District 5-4A title outright.

Burkburnett has qualified for the playoffs in 17 straight seasons. Hirschi is making its 14th consecutive postseason appearance, winning eight district titles during that span.

"We put a lot of time on the defensive side of the ball, and it makes us feel good to play good defense," Hirschi coach Donald Hedge said. "A lot of our preparation time is spent on our defense."

Burkburnett was able to stay close with Hirschi until Bulldogs’ standout T.J. Newton departed the floor due to committing three fouls with seven minutes remaining in the first half.

Hirschi’s defense took advantage of Newton’s absence and outscored the Bulldogs 16-2 following Newton’s departure to take a commanding 37-18 lead into the locker room.

"We struggled so bad on offense when we lost (Newton) to fouls," Burkburnett coach Danny Nix said. "We gave up a couple of easy shots as well, but it changed the game when we had to take TJ out."

Hirschi’s Ernest Young received plenty of well-deserved attention from the Bulldogs, but the Cameron commit’s supporting cast played a significant role on Tuesday.

Jamarion Carroll, Jemeree Ingram, and Jaleal Minniefield contributed 39 combined points while playing lockdown defense against Newton, who scored 11 points in his final game at home.

"We have a good team. Hirschi is a great place to coach because you're going to have consistent talent every year," Hedge said. "They're tough, talented, and coachable kids that embrace our style of coaching."

Both teams turn their attention to the playoffs, which begin early next week. Hirschi draws Gatesville, while Burkburnett matches up with Glen Rose in the bi-district round. Sites, dates and times for those games will be announced at a later date.

"We have to regroup," Nix said. "I don't think that's our team that was on the floor tonight. We have a better team than that. A lot of teams get beat, and we just have to come together and play better."

"We're proud of this outcome, but we have to start the journey again," Hedge said. "My message to the team is simple — try and be the best team every time you hit the court."

HOLLIDAY GIRLS 73, MILLSAP 46

GRAHAM – Campbell Jurecek, Sarah Cowan and Katy Piper combined for 59 points Tuesday, leading Holliday to a 73-46 victory against Millsap in a Region I-3A bi-district playoff matchup. Holliday advances to play Jim Ned at 6 p.m. Friday in Stamford.

Jurecek led all scorers with 23 points. Cowan had her best night of the season, draining five 3-pointers and scoring 20 points. Piper added 16 points.

The Lady Eagles used a strong first half to put little doubt about this outcome, taking a 34-11 lead into halftime.

RIDER BOYS 65, AZLE 46

Keitenn Bristow scored 20 points, leading Rider to a 65-46 victory against Azle and a eighth consecutive postseason appearance. The Raiders (10-22, 5-5) hold the third seed out of District 5-5A and will face Richland in the bi-district round. More information about that playoff matchup will be announced later.

Bristow was joined in double figures by Cameron Fitzhenry and Braeden Arias, who scored 10 each. The Raiders raced to a 15-7 lead in the first quarter and took a 30-23 advantage into halftime. Rider outscored Azle 14-5 in the third, essentially putting the game away.

WINDTHORST BOYS 50, ARCHER CITY 48

ARCHER CITY – Windthorst made sure a three-team tournament to decide the District 9-2A isn’t needed with a 50-48 victory against rival Archer City. The Trojans (14-12, 4-6) clinch the fourth seed with the win combined with a Quanah’s 60-54 loss to Seymour.

Archer City (17-12, 7-3) serves as the No. 3 seed, with Petrolia and Seymour finishing tied for first atop the district standings.

However, Seymour (25-7, 8-2) receives the No. 1 seed thanks to sweeping Petrolia (19-9, 8-2) during the regular season.
