HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Multiple district titles claimed in girls regular-season finales

BURKBURNETT GIRLS 53, IOWA PARK 45

IOWA PARK – Burkburnett claimed a share of the District 5-4A title and the No. 2 playoff seed with a 53-45 victory against Iowa Park on Tuesday. The Lady Bulldogs (20-12, 8-2) share the district title with Graham (15-16, 8-2) although the Lady Blues earn the No. 1 playoff seed with a season sweep of Burk.

Iowa Park (20-11, 7-3) finishes third in the district. Hirschi (15-16, 4-6) places fourth thanks to its 54-37 win against Vernon coupled with Graham’s 60-23 victory over Mineral Wells.

Graham draws Brownwood, while Burkburnett gets Lampasas in the first round of the playoffs. Specifics on those matchups are yet to be set.

Hirschi will get the winner of a seeding game between Glen Rose and Stephenville, while Iowa Park draws the loser of that matchup.

RIDER GIRLS 71, ALEDO 69 (OT)

The Rider Lady Raiders clinched a third straight district title in dramatic fashion Monday night.

In a game moved from Friday to Monday due to the weekend’s wintry weather, the Lady Raiders overcame a rough fourth quarter to edge Aledo in overtime, 71-69, at Rider Fieldhouse. The win gives Rider (18-9, 8-1) at least a share of the District 5-5A title.

Rider can clinch the district outright with a win against Brewer (22-11, 7-2) Wednesday. That game is set for 6 p.m. at Brewer.

Rider led 36-25 at halftime, extending that advantage to 49-35 in the third quarter. But Aledo, which handed Rider its lone district loss last month, rallied in the fourth, scoring 25 points and tying the game at 60 to force overtime.

Kylie Flippin and Jalynn Bristow combined to score all of Rider’s points in the extra session, including a 6 of 8 showing at the free-throw line to help ice the game.

Flippin and Bristow combined for 59 points in the win. Bristow finished with 39 points and 20 rebounds. Flippin had 20 points and seven steals.

WINDTHORST, ARCHER CITY SHARE TITLE

ARCHER COUNTY – Rivals Windthorst and Archer City are sharing the District 9-2A title after each won its respective regular-season finale Tuesday. The Trojanettes (24-4, 9-1) and Lady Cats (22-9, 9-1) will decide who gets the No. 1 seed with a coin flip Wednesday.

The Lady Cats wrapped their regular season with a 60-22 victory against Olney. Windthorst got more of a challenge from Seymour, which finished third in the district, but defended its home court with a 47-36 victory.

Also in District 9-2A, Quanah defeated Petrolia, 56-44, claiming the fourth and final playoff berth in the district.

NOCONA GIRLS 54, HOLLIDAY 51

HOLLIDAY – Holliday’s last-second prayer wasn’t answered, and Nocona held on for a 54-51 victory Tuesday, completing an undefeated sweep of District 7-3A. It’s a fourth straight district title for the Lady Indians (31-4, 12-0).

Megyn Meekins led the Lady Indians with 22 points, while Raylee Sparkman scored 13. Payton Murray led the Lady Eagles with 16 points, with Campbell Jurecek scoring 12 and Katy Piper adding 10 in her first game back from injury.

Nocona heads into the postseason as the No. 1 seed with Holliday taking the second seed. Bowie had already clinched the No. 3 seed. Breckenridge defeated City View, 36-31, Tuesday to claim the fourth seed.

Bowie draws Brock in the first round. Nocona is pitted against Eastland, and Holliday takes on Millsap. Specifics on those playoff matchups have not been set.

NOCONA BOYS 56, HOLLIDAY 55

HOLLIDAY – Brady McCasland hit a 3-pointer to put Nocona up by a point over Holliday with seven seconds remaining, but the finish of the Indians’ 56-55 victory against Holliday was wilder than a game-winning shot in the final minutes.

After McCasland’s 3-pointer, Holliday got a shot off that was deflected. The Eagles were called for a foul during the ensuing battle for the ball, sending McCasland back to the free-throw line.

However, Nocona’s bench was whistled for a foul after one of its players went onto the court while celebrating the play.

McCasland knocked down both free throws for a 56-53 lead. Holliday answered by hitting both technical free throws and got the ball with less than a second on the clock.

The Eagles got off a shot, but it didn’t fall, allowing Nocona to escape Holliday with a key District 7-3A win.

McCasland led all scorers with 22 points. Holliday got 18 points from Austin Jones.

The win keeps Nocona (18-15, 5-5) in fourth place in District 7-3A, holding off Henrietta (21-8, 5-6) for the final playoff berth. Nocona has Breckenridge and Jacksboro left on its schedule. Henrietta has only district champion City View.

Holliday (20-8, 7-3) falls into a tie for second with Bowie (19-8, 7-3). Those two meet Friday.

PRAIRIE VALLEY BOYS 89, GOLD-BURG 71

NOCONA – Tyler Winkler hit seven 3-pointers and scored 33 points for Prairie Valley on Tuesday night. But his monstrous performance was overshadowed by teammate Isaac Yeargin, who remained on fire from behind the arc.

Yeargin drained 13 3-pointers in Prairie Valley’s 89-71 victory against Gold-Burg, scoring a game-high 43 points. The win keeps Prairie Valley’s playoff hopes alive in District 22-A. The Bulldogs (16-13, 5-5) are chasing Saint Jo (18-11, 7-3) for the third and final playoff berth available in the district. They must beat Saint Jo on Tuesday to avoid postseason elimination.
