High school basketball playoff scores, schedules; Broome girls pull off upset

Broome’s girls pulled off the biggest first-round upset of the playoffs Thursday night with a 38-34 win against Emerald in the opening round of the Class AAA division.

Tenth-ranked Emerald (19-3) was a No. 1 seed, having gone 8-0 in Region 4, and was 11-0 at home with an eight-game winning streak to end the regular season. Broome (12-11) went 2-6 in Region 3 and had lost four of six down the stretch.

Broome will have to topple an even better team in Saturday’s second round. The Centurions will play at fourth-ranked Wren (23-5).

The rest of the Class AAA girls bracket is full of Upper State teams. Top seed Southside, Travelers Rest, Blue Ridge, Walhalla and Chapman all won.

In Class AAAAA boys, Byrnes stayed alive, but Boiling Springs, Spartanburg and J.L. Mann were eliminated.

Among the best games Friday are Greer at Greenville and Westside at Wade Hampton in Class AAAA boys; Union County at Wren in AAA boys; T.L. Hanna at Dorman, Woodmont at Spring Valley and Byrnes at Mauldin in AAAAA girls; and Landrum at Silver Bluff in Class AA girls.
