High School Basketball: Power rankings after two weeks of South Bend-area action

The boys high school basketball season is already off and running, and two weeks in a handful of teams are turning heads.

Penn, Mishawaka Marian, South Bend Washington, Mishawaka and Northridge have been hot out of the gate and remain undefeated, while South Bend Clay has put up its best start in the last decade.

Here is a look at the top-10 local boys basketball teams so far this season.

1. Penn (2-0)

Recent results: Wins against SB Clay (92-58), Crown Point (70-49)

Upcoming games: Dec. 6 vs New Prairie, Dec. 9 at Concord, Dec. 10 vs. Zionsville (N)

Penn, No. 3 in 4A, is already playing like one of the best teams in the state after two games. Markus Burton, a Notre Dame signee, opened this season with a career-high 33 points in Penn's season-opening win against Clay and matched that total against Crown Point later in the week. Joey Garwood also had a big game, scoring 22 against the Colonials.

2. Mishawaka Marian (3-0)

Recent results: Wins against Goshen (48-34), SB Riley (78-50), FW Luers (86-60)

Upcoming games: Dec. 6 at Mishawaka, Dec. 9 vs Plymouth, Dec. 10 vs Warren Central

Marian, No. 2 in 3A, has started this season strong with three consecutive wins. Deaglan Sullivan, the Knights' senior point guard, led with 16 points in a win against Goshen. Fellow senior Dar'e'on Thornton scored 11.

3. South Bend Washington (4-0)

Recent results: Wins against Elkhart (83-47), New Prairie (67-34), FW South (71-57)

Upcoming games: Dec. 9 vs SB Clay, Dec. 10 at LaPorte, Dec. 13 at Andrean

Washington, No. 13 in 3A, has been as strong as any team to begin the 2022 season. Marcus Northern, a senior, led the Panthers with 26 points in their win over Elkhart. Eric Nocentelli, a former Elkhart player, also scored 15 in that game and Steven Reynolds, the freshman son of girls basketball coach Steve Reynolds, is making waves after he scored 14 against the Lions.

4. Northridge (4-0)

Recent results: Wins against Elkhart (51-43), Westview (63-61), Culver Academy (50-48), Valparaiso (53-41).

Upcoming games: Dec. 10 vs Angola, Dec. 13 at SB Riley

Northridge, No. 17 in 4A, has been living on the edge in recent games but has remained perfect for its first 4-0 start since 2013. The Raiders stay out of conference for two more games before opening Northern Lakes play against Goshen on Dec. 17.

5. NorthWood (3-1)

Recent results: Wins against Lakeland (74-37), FW Concordia (70-31), Triton (75-37), Loss to Beech Grove (55-51)

Upcoming games: Dec. 8 vs Westview, Dec 10 at Fairfield

NorthWood, the No. 1 team in 3A, suffered its first loss of the season, falling to last year's 3A state champion Beech Grove on a neutral court. Cade Brenner, NorthWood's star guard surpassed the 1,000-point mark of his career this past week.

6. South Bend Saint Joe (2-1)

Recent results: Wins vs SB Adams (84-80), Marquette Catholic (81-71), Loss to Concord (45-41)

Upcoming games: Dec. 8 vs Jimtown, Dec. 10 vs Goshen, Dec. 16 vs SB Riley

Saint Joe, No. 23 in 3A, rebounded from its opening loss against Concord to pick up two big road wins against Adams and Marquette Catholic. Chase Knoieczny has had a huge start to his sophomore season scoring 36 points against Adams and 22 against Marquette Catholic. Jayce Lee also scored 23 points in the Catholic win.

7. Mishawaka (2-0)

Recent results: Wins against Tippecanoe Valley (62-57), Victory Christian (61-58)

Upcoming games: Dec. 6 vs. Mish Marian, Dec. 9 vs SB Riley

Unranked Mishawaka has started the Bodie Bender era on the right foot, winning its first two games of the season. The Cavemen will get their biggest test of the season thus far when it hosts city rival, and defending 3A runner-up, Mishawaka Marian this week.

8. South Bend Clay (2-1)

Recent results: Wins against Smith Academy (84-29), Glenn (75-63), Loss to Penn (92-58)

Upcoming games: Dec. 6 at Niles, Dec. 9 at SB Washington, Dec. 13 at Goshen

The unranked Colonials have been one of the stories to open this season, starting 2-0 for the first time in 10 years. Ameer Harris has been stellar for Clay, scoring 23 against Smith Academy and 32 points in Clay's upset win at Glenn.

9. Goshen (2-1)

Recent results: Wins against Fairfield (50-41), Bremen (60-28), Loss to Marian (48-34)

Upcoming games: Dec. 6 vs Elkhart, Dec. 10 at SB Saint Joe

Goshen, No. 22 in 4A, has had a strong start to the season with wins against Fairfield and Bremen. Quinn Bechtel led the RedHawks in their win over the Falcons with 16 points, while Deecon Hill's 11 led Goshen to its win over Bremen.

10.Glenn (1-2)

Recent results: Win against Elkhart (58-24), Losses to Plymouth (46-37), SB Clay (75-63)

Upcoming games: Dec. 8 at SB Riley, Dec. 10 at Tippecanoe Valley

The good feelings from Glenn's NIC title a year ago quickly disappeared after the team's 0-2 start to the season before picking up win No. 1 against Elkhart. Junior forward Brycen Hannah has been dominant for the Falcons, scoring a game-high 35 points in their loss to Clay and a game-high 18 in their win against Elkhart. Chase Miller, a first-year varsity player also scored 13 in Glenn's win.
