Winter storm to force big changes to Charlotte-area high school basketball schedule
A winter storm expected to bring heavy rains and high winds to the area is forcing major changes to the high school basketball schedule.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools announced Monday afternoon that it would be closed Tuesday with no extracurricular activities or sports.
The National Weather Services is calling for wind gusts between 45 and 55 miles per hour, along with tornado-like activity, heavy rain and potential flooding
Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Lancaster, Rock Hill Schools and Union County School are also closed Tuesday with no sports.

(Girls) Albemarle (10-1, 1-0 Yadkin Valley 1A-2A) at Union Academy (9-1, 1-0), ppd — Two of the region’s top 1A teams square off in Monroe. Albemarle’s Amari Baldwin is among the state’s scoring leaders, averaging more than 30 points a game. Ranon Suttle (19.3 ppg) leads Union Academy, which has outscored opponents by an average of 66-28.
(Boys) Chambers (9-4, 4-0 Queen City 3A-4A) at North Mecklenburg (11-2, 4-0), Wed — Chambers is on a four-game winning streak, led by senior Maurio Hanson II, who is averaging 15.8 points, 9.5 rebounds and 3.8 assists per contest. Duke commit Isaiah Evans has been especially sharp lately, averaging more than 23 points in the last five games and shooting better than 60 percent from the floor.
(Girls) Charlotte Catholic (11-2, 4-0 Southwestern 4A) at Butler (9-3, 4-0), ppd — Blanca Thomas, the visiting Cougars’ 6-6 standout, is averaging 20.4 points a game. Butler is led by a 5-3 guard, Brooklyn Saunders, who is averaging 21 points, 5.8 assists and an impressive 6.1 steals per contest. You might want to stick around for the boys’ game, as Charlotte Catholic (3-1) and Butler (4-0) are among the conference’s pace-setters.
(Boys) Crest (7-1, 2-0 Big South 3A) at Ashbrook (10-1, 2-0), ppd — After losing its opener, Crest has won seven in a row. King Rhodes, a 6-3 sophomore, leads the Chargers with 14.1 points and 9.8 rebounds a game. Ashbrook has four players averaging in double figures, led by junior Isaac Byers, who is scoring 21.2 points a contest and averaging four steals.
(Girls) Hough (9-5, 3-1 Queen City 3A-4A) at Mallard Creek (11-3, 4-0), ppd — The visiting Huskies are faring well with a young lineup, as junior Chloe Golombeck and sophomore Kate Breault each are averaging more than 10 points a game. Senior Lili Booker (16.8 ppg) leads Mallard Creek, which has won nine of its last 10.
(Girls) Jay M. Robinson (9-2, 5-0 South Piedmont 3A) at West Rowan (10-1, 5-0), ppd — Two teams with legitimate state championship hopes square off. The host Falcons have won eight in a row and had five players score in double figures their last game. Senior Ella Hobbs, an Ohio State commit, leads Robinson with 20.0 points and 6.4 rebounds a game, and her sophomore sister Camri is averaging 16.7 points.
(Boys) Lincolnton (10-2, 1-1 Catawba Valley 2A) at Bandys (10-2, 2-0), Wed, about 8 p.m. — Lincolnton is aiming to bounce back from Friday’s 71-67 loss to Newton-Conover. The Wolves are led by the No. 3 scorer in North Carolina, 6-4 freshman L.J. Smith, who is averaging 31.9 points a game. Bandys’ Landon Vaughan, a 6-9 junior, is averaging 19.2 points and 9.3 rebounds and had a 26/13 game Dec. 28 against powerhouse Ashbrook.
