High school basketball rewind: Cannon School bounces back with tight win over Forsyth

After being upset Friday night by Davidson Day, Cannon School bounced back with a 79-77 overtime win over Forsyth Country Day Saturday at the Phenom Hoops Tip Off at Carmel Christian.

Cannon School (1-1) is No. 5 in The Observer’s preseason Sweet 16 boys basketball poll.

Saturday, Cannon ran out to a 17-point halftime lead before Forsyth came storming back behind Iverson King (22 points) and Bobby Cannon (18 points).

Forsyth tied the game at 69 at the end of regulation.

In overtime, Cannon forced some late turnovers to help get a close win.

Miami-bound guard Austin Swartz, The Observer’s preseason player of the year in Cabarrus County, had 23 points. Power 5 recruit Isaiah Henry had 22 and Tyler Martin 9.

Moravian Prep 65, Northside Christian 61: The teams played a close game at the Phenom Hoops event, with neither able to pull away. Down the stretch, however, Moravian Prep made some key free throws that were the difference. Moravian was led by 21 points from Abu Yarmah and 14 from Isaac Ellis. Northside, No. 9 in the preseason Sweet 16, got 18 each from Josh Bullock and Josiah Johnson-Freeman.

The Burlington School 55, Concord Academy 49: Zion Walker had 22 points and Devin Sims 10 to push the reigning 2A private school champs past preseason Sweet 16 No. 11 Concord Academy. The Burlington School led by eight after the end of the third quarter and maintained its lead in the final period. Sean Birmingham, a Cannon School transfer, had 14 to lead Concord Academy.

Davidson Day kicked off the season with a monster upset, beating Cannon School 64-61 in overtime at Cannon School.

Cannon was No. 5 in The Charlotte Observer preseason Sweet 16 poll.

Cannon, led by Miami recruit Austin Swartz, plays Forsyth Country Day Saturday at the Phenom Hoops/Carmel Tip Off at Carmel Christian Sasturday at 6. Forsyth Country Day (1-0) beat Carmel Christian 76-56 in its opener Friday.

Forsyth Country Day 76, Carmel Christian 56: Ahead by only three at halftime, Forsyth expanded its lead to 12 after the third quarter and ran away from host Carmel Christian in the fourth. Bobby Cannon had 24 points and Iverson King had 22 for Forsyth Country Day. Olympic transfer Kam Taylor had 22 for Carmel, which got 20 from Bryce Slay, son of head coach Tamar Slay.

Moravian Prep, 67, The Burlington School 66: Elli Ellis made a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer for the win. Eli Ellis had 15 and Isaac Ellis 14 for Moravian. Burlington School got 19 from Zion Walker, 15 from Kaden Hammond and 12 from King Gibson.

Northside Christian 67, Combine Regional 45: Northside ran out to a 24-8 lead and won easily behind 22 points from Kyrell Shaw. Yudai Ishikawa and Jacob Brandly had 11 each for Combine Regional
