High school basketball rewind: Holland, West Ottawa, Hamilton, HC, Saugatuck all win openers

The Holland High School girls basketball team opened its season with a 42-23 win at Fruitport on Tuesday.

The Dutch closed out the game on a 19-2 run while holding the Trojans scoreless in the fourth quarter.Holland was led in scoring by Emma Margaron with 10. Ari Gray led the team in steals and deflections and scored nine points. Hadleigh Hilgert chipped in with six.

West Ottawa 59, Gull Lake 19

The Panthers outscored Gull Lake 23-4 in the first quarter to race to a huge lead and coast to victory.

Gabby Reynolds had 19 of her 26 points in that opening quarter.

Sophomore Magaly Lemus added 11 points and 14 rebounds, and Chelsea Overbeek chipped in with eight points.

Hamilton 34, Hopkins 31

The Hawkeyes held on for a season-opening win against Hopkins.

Hamilton used a 12-4 advantage in the second quarter to take control of the game.

Leading scorers for the Hawkeyes were Kyra Kleinheksel and Kaitlyn Geurink both with nine points each.

"We played a solid Hopkins team tonight. The score was close the whole game. We showed poise down the stretch and never gave up the lead in the second half," Hamilton coach Jacquelyn Malloch said. "It's always great to start the season with a 'W.'"

Holland Christian 50, Covenant Christian 30

The Maroons won their season opener on Tuesday. They led 14-5 after the first quarter and never looked back.

Holland Christian was led by Camryn VandenBosch with 19 points.

Kayla Cannon chipped in with eight points and Sierra Malone had seven.

“I was really happy with how our defense fueled our offense," Holland Christian coach Levi Painter. "We created turnovers and were able to speed up the pace of play. The girls also shared the ball well and were excellent in their shot selection.”

Saugatuck 44, Bloomingdale 30

The Trailblazers opened the season with a 44-30 victory over the Cardinals.

Saugatuck didn’t panic with only a four-point first quarter as the fullcourt press gradually picked apart Bloomingdale.

With the press and pressure defense working the outside shooting wasn’t as Saugatuck could not find the bottom of the basket from beyond the arc all night.

“You wouldn’t of guessed it tonight but believe it or not I feel this is one of our better perimeter teams, we had great looks but it was just one of those nights, I’m not worried about it. What’s impressive is that we found other ways to get it done, particularly with our defense. I’m very proud of our effort,” Saugatuck coach Kevin Tringali said.

The Trailblazers were led by Senior Haley Rivera who led all scorers with 13 points, Kennedy Gustafson had a huge game, recording 22 rebounds and 12 points.

Bangor 28, Fennville 16

The Blackhawks lost their season opener.

Fennville led after one quarter 7-6 but went into halftime down 11-7.

Sophomore Lila Rosema led the Blackhawks with six points. Madisynn Jefferson followed up with five points.
