Central Cabarrus High’s nationally-ranked basketball team has the same plan most every time it takes the court.

The Vikings want to speed you up, force turnovers and get a lot of assists. That plan helped Central Cabarrus win the 2023 NC 3A state title and become a heavy favorite to repeat this season.

That plan was also in effect during Thursday’s 84-72 win over Chambers at the Phenom Hoops’ Holiday Classic at Cox Mill High School. Central Cabarrus is No. 3 in The Observer’s Sweet 16 poll. Chambers is No. 5.

A key figure in Thursday’s win was 6-foot-9 senior center Josh Dalton, who had missed the three previous games with health concerns related to atrial fibrillation, or an abnormal heart rhythm.

Dalton’s job Thursday? Neutralize Chambers’ 6-8 post player Maurio Hanson, one of the best players in North Carolina. Hanson finished with 13 points, four rebounds and four assists, but he didn’t have the type of major impact on the game that he usually does.

“Josh (Dalton) did a really good job inside against (Hanson),” Central Cabarrus coach Jim Baker said. “He is a great young man. He can shoot the basketball as good as anybody on the team. He is very athletic. And, (Dalton) hasn’t been playing for a very long time in our system. He is getting a better understanding of all of my coaching slang.”

Dalton said he was just glad to be playing again. Missing the past three games was tough.

“We play so hard,” he said. “And the twins (Central Cabarrus stars Carson and Chase Daniel) talk to me out there on the court. I am glad to be back. I am very glad to be back.”

Besides Dalton’s work on Hanson, Central Cabarrus also did a good job penetrating into the heart of the Chambers defense. That allowed the Vikings’ guards to throw lob passes to Dalton or Desmond Kent Jr.

Kent finished with 29 points. Dalton had 16.

“(Dalton) makes it so much easier for us,” Chase Daniel said. “Just having him down there makes the defense think. He is a great player and he fits in with us extremely well. We are glad to have him back.”

Said Carson Daniel: “Josh is special. He is one of those players that we can always rely on to get a big rebound. He and DJ are always fighting to get rebounds. He is just so versatile. He can knock down the jump shot if necessary. Having him run the baseline getting all of those rebounds and dunks just gets us going and gives the team motivation.”

Three who made a difference

Carson Daniel, Central Cabarrus: He is considered more of the true point guard between himself and his twin brother. Carson Daniel finished with 17 points, five assists and five steals. His defensive pressure also contributed to several other turnovers by the Cougars.

Josh Dalton, Central Cabarrus: Despite having to sit most of the second quarter with foul trouble — while his team was outscored 26-19 — Dalton finished the game with 16 points. His presence in the paint helped alter a lot of shots around the rim.

Desmond Kent Jr., Central Cabarrus: The 6-6 forward had a game-high 29 points, six rebounds and two assists. Anytime the Vikings would secure a steal, Kent would hustle to the other end and finish at the rim or get fouled.

What’s next?

Central Cabarrus (8-0) will face Sun Valley at 8:30 p.m. next Wednesday in the first round of the Mount Pleasant Holiday Tournament. Chambers (5-3) will have a quick turnaround and play Salisbury at 5 p.m. Friday.
