High school basketball stars JuJu Watkins and DJ Wagner attended prom together this weekend, despite attending different schools. Watkins says Wagner asked her to prom over FaceTime.

“He asked me on FaceTime, actually. We started talking about prom and he asked me,” she told PEOPLE.

The duo attended the prom at Sierra Canyon High School, where Watkins is a student. For the occasion, she opted for a gray leather dress as an ode to her personal style.

“I mean, personally, I haven’t seen a leather prom dress. It’s something different and my own style. I feel like that’s something that I definitely would wear, which was the whole inspiration, just making something different and pretty at the same time,” Watkins said.

Wagner opted for a traditional black tuxedo, adorned with a white and red corsage to match Watkins’.

They posed for photos with their parents before heading to the party.

“We just had to take one for the team, so we just stood there taking pictures in the same pose for a long time,” Watkins said. “Then our parents and everybody jumped in, which was cute.”

Watkins says the experience was fun and that she partied alongside Bronny James, who also attends Sierra Canyon. They all danced to Sheck Wes’s “Mo Bamba.”

She added that she is proud she was able to attend prom, as the experience is very different from her daily life training for basketball.

“It’s something that I’ll be able to look back on and be proud that I went. I feel like it’s so easy to be like, oh, I’m so busy and I can’t go, but the fact that I was able to go and experience that with my friends, who I won’t see for a long time because we’re all going to college, was definitely something that I’ll show my kids one day,” she told the news outlet.

For Watkins and Wagner, the event marks the end of high school and the beginning of their respective college basketball careers. Watkins will be playing basketball at the University of Southern California next Fall, while Wagner will be joining the Wildcats at the University of Kentucky.
