High School Boys Basketball: Cards rally cut short

Mar. 5—WILLMAR — Despite a valiant effort in the second half, the Willmar boys basketball team was unable to overcome a huge hole against Brainerd on Thursday night.

The Cardinals sliced a 24-point deficit down to seven before falling to the Warriors 69-60 from the Big Red Gym at Willmar High School.

Willmar drops to 6-8 overall and is tied for sixth in the Central Lakes Conference standings with St. Cloud Apollo. Brainerd (12-2, 9-2 CLC) is second in the conference.

The visitors took control early thanks to a 29-2 swing.

The Cardinals had moments where their man-to-man defense kept pace with the road team, but either from the drive-and-kick or simply shooting over the top of their defender, Brainerd couldn't be slowed down in the first half.

A 3-pointer from Logen Roberts gave the Warriors a 12-10 lead and kicked off a 13-0 run. Willmar senior forward Aaron Watland hit a driving layup to briefly stop the bleeding, but the hosts came up empty on their next 12 possessions, five of which resulted in a turnover.

Brainerd responded with a 16-0 surge capped by a 3-pointer from John Pecarich to push the advantage to 36-12. The Warriors entered halftime with a 40-20 cushion with the help of eight makes from behind the arc.

The Cardinals made their push shortly after returning from the locker rooms. They trailed 47-27 before a 13-2 rally got them back in it. Jacob Rosendahl with a pull-up jump shot. The senior guard delivered another pull-up to cut the lead 47-37 before a Watland free throw got Willmar to within single digits for the first time since his aforementioned field goal.

Sophomore forward Blake Schoolmeester drilled two foul shots to make it 49-42 with 8 minutes, 16 seconds remaining, but Pecarich answered on the ensuing possession with one of his four 3-pointers on the night.

Brainerd held anywhere between an eight-to-11-point lead the rest of the way.

Griffin Rushin led the Warriors with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Mitchell Degen added 15 points and Pecarich finished with 14.

Rosendahl led the Cardinals with 17 points, 10 rebounds and a pair of steals. Ross Minnick chipped in 15 points.

Willmar plays St. Cloud Apollo at 7:15 p.m. Saturday at the Big Red Gym.

Benson's Ben Peterson pumped in 40 points, but Morris/Chokio-Alberta's Jackson Loge had 51 in the Tigers' victory at Benson.

Loge, a 6-foot-8 junior, made 19 of 34 field goals (56%), including 7 of 12 (58%) from 3-point range. He was 6-for-12 from the free-throw line and also had 17 rebounds, four assists and three blocks.

Peterson made 13 of 26 shots (50%), including 6 of 12 from 3-point range. He also was 8-for-9 (88%) from the foul line.

On a memorable night for Case Mulder, Central Minnesota Christian earned the victory over Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg at Kerkhoven.

Mulder, a junior guard, scored his 1,000th career point.

"He came into the game needing nine," CMCS head coach Ted Taatjes said. "He got it midway through the first half on a three-pointer."

Taatjes called a timeout and Mulder, who finished with 16 points, was presented with a ball. He'll be formally honored in the Bluejays' home game Friday against Windom, Taatjes said.

Blake Greenwaldt had 14 points, Ben Van Eps 11 and Caleb Vander Beek 10 for CMCS.

Alex Call led the Fighting Saints with 13 points. KMS plays Renville County West on Monday at Renville.

Brady Kienitz had a strong game for the Wolverines. The senior guard had 24 points on 8-for-15 shooting from the field. He also had 10 rebounds and five assists. Carter Wrede was the only other MACCRAY to score in double figures with 10 points.
