High School Boys Basketball: Corpus Christi, Coastal Bend boys bi-district round recap

Key storylines and a recap of the bi-district round of the high school basketball playoffs for Coastal Bend and Corpus Christi teams.

Coyotes end drought

Alice's bi-district win against Port Isabel was 19 years in the making. For the first time since 2004, Alice will play in the area round of the boys high school basketball playoffs. Calvin Villanueva led the Coyotes with a game-best 18 points and Alejandro Asevedo added 14 to knock off the District 32-4A champion Tarpons.

Class 4A squads take step forward

It was a big night for Class 4A teams as Sinton, Beeville, Alice and Calallen each captured bi-district wins on Tuesday. Sinton, which won the District 30-4A title, captured its first postseason win since 2020 and Calallen advanced to the area round for the first time since the 2014 season. The Trojans advanced to the area round for the first time since 2018 and Alice ended a 19-year playoff drought.

Good start for Vets, Miller

Miller and Veterans Memorial took a step in the right direction if they want to face each other for a third time in the 2022-23 high school basketball season. Both District 29-5A powerhouses opened the postseason victorious with wins against Rio Grande Valley squads. The last time the two teams met in the playoffs was in 2019 during the Region IV-5A tournament.

CLASS 5A

Veterans Memorial 76, La Joya Palmview 75: The Eagles held off Palmview in a bi-district game in Falfurrias to move onto the area round. Veterans Memorial is 23-11 on the season and will take on McAllen in an area round at a time, date and place to be determined.

Flour Bluff 47, Laredo Martin 28: The Hornets rolled into the area round with a convincing victory on Tuesday. Flour Bluff (22-11) will advance to take on Edinburg Vela in the area round.

CLASS 4A

La Feria 59, Tuloso-Midway 54: The Warriors season came to an end on Monday in Kingsville. Tuloso-Midway finishes it season with a 17-14 record. La Feria advances to take on Sinton or Uvalde in the area round.

Somerset 60, Rockport-Fulton 44: Somerset ended Rockport-Fulton's season with a victory in Kenedy on Monday. The Bulldogs outscored the Pirates 34-18 in the second half to secure the victory. Somerset will advance to take on Port Isabel or Alice in the area round. Rockport-Fulton finishes it season at 25-11.

Beeville 59, Floresville 55: The Trojans held off a Floresville rally to win a bi-district game and move into the area round on Tuesday. Beeville will take on Bishop in the area round at a time, date and place to be determined.

Calallen 56, Zapata 49: The Wildcats held on for a victory on Friday at Tuloso-Midway in the bi-district round and will take on Pleasanton in the area round.

Bishop 57, La Grulla 43: The District 31-4A champion Badgers took care of business in the first round with a victory on Tuesday in Falfurrias. Bishop (28-7) will take on Beeville in the area round. Isaac Colunga led the Badgers with 20 points, including five 3-pointers and Kristian Ramos added 16 points.

Pleasanton 68, Ingleside 60: Ingleside's first playoff appearance in more than a decade came to an end in the first round after a loss to Pleasanton on Tuesday. The Mustangs finish the season at 16-11 and the Eagles will take on Calallen in the area round.

Sinton 76, Uvalde 44: The Pirates rolled to a bi-district victory on Tuesday and improved to 23-9 on the season. Sinton will take on La Feria in the area round.

Alice 66, Port Isabel 63: The Coyotes earned a playoff victory, knocking off the District 32-4A champion Tarpons in Kingsville. Alice will advance to the area round where it will take on Somerset at a time, date and place to be determined.

CLASS 3A

Aransas Pass 75, Hebbronville 37: George Acosta scored 23 points and Kason Coronado added 11 as the Panthers rolled to a bi-district victory on Tuesday. Aransas Pass, who improved to 21-13 on the season, will take on Rio Hondo in the area round on Thursday in Kingsville. Dylan Holbein led the Longhorns with 12 points in the loss. Hebbronville finished the season at 12-18.

San Diego 43, Odem 42: The Vaqueros won a thriller on Friday against the Owls to advance to the area round. San Diego will take on Rio Grande Valley small school power Santa Rosa as a time, date and place to be determined in the area round.

London 70, Goliad 26: The Pirates rolled to a bi-district victory on Tuesday and will take on a yet to be determined opponent in the area round.

Santa Gertrudis Academy 78, Taft 52: The Lions rolled to a playoff opening victory against Taft and will take on Edinburg IDEA Quest in the area round. Kayden McClure scored 20 points to lead the Lions as Josh Adkins added 14 and Adam Silva 13.

CLASS 2A

Santa Maria 80, Woodsboro 52: No. 22 Santa Maria topped the Eagles in a bi-district game on Monday. Santa Maria advances to take on Goldthwaite in the area round at a time, date and place to be determind.

Skidmore-Tynan 71, La Villa 56: The Bobcats rolled into the area round with a convincing victory on Tuesday. Skidmore-Tynan improves to 26-6 on the season and will take on Mason or Sabinal in the area round at a time, date and place to be determined. Cole Rivers led the Bobcats with 21 points and Bennett Martinez added 18 and Alexander Gonzalez 11 in the victory.

Port Aransas 66, Agua Dulce 37: The Marlins started the playoffs with a big win at West Oso High School on Tuesday. Port Aransas advances to the area round where it will face San Antonio Lee Academy or Johnson City.
