High school boys golf: Crimson Cliffs and Orem are neck and neck after Day 1 of 4A state tournament

A year ago Crimson Cliffs ran away with the 4A state championship by 28 strokes. Repeating this year won’t be nearly as easy.

Crimson Cliffs is the Day 1 leader after shooting team score of 286 at The Ridge Golf Course in West Valley City, but that lead is just three strokes over a stroke Orem team that shot a 289. Both Desert Hills and Park City are lurking within striking distance as well after shooting a 295.

Thursday’s second round gets underway at 9 a.m., and the chase for the team title should be tight throughout.

Reigning 4A medalist Boston Bracken of Crimson Cliffs has a three-stroke lead after Day 1 after he shot a 7-under 65 amid wet and windy conditions on Wednesday. The weather forecast for Thursday’s final round calls for much the same conditions.

Bracken made six birdies, one eagle and one bogey.

Sky View’s Miles Cromwell sits in second place with a 4-under 68, while four other golfers tied at 3-under — Timpanogos’ Noah Moody, Cedar’s Matthew Robb, Crimson Cliff’s Lincoln Markham and Orem’s Maddox Nielson.
