HIGH SCHOOL BOYS HOOPS: Eagles still flying high

Jan. 7—Nathan Hutchinson

Earlier this week, the Eagles (10-5) almost reached the century mark for the first time in more than a decade in a win on the road over East Jessamine.

That offensive momentum certainly carried over into a match-up with 44th District rival Model Laboratory (5-8) on Friday in Richmond.

Madison Southern scored the first 10 points of the game and built a 30-point halftime lead (50-20).

"We were pretty locked in from the start tonight," Southern coach Bill Bevin said. "We came out and executed the gameplan and did some things well which have been working on — and it showed on the scoreboard."

Zach Hudson had 23 points, eight rebounds and four assists as the Eagles rolled to a 76-48 win over the Patriots. Jay Rose had 15 points and five rebounds, while Brett Erslan had 13 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and four blocks.

Cale Vicars had a team-best 15 points for Model.

The Eagles have won seven of their past eight games.

Southern had 31 points off turnovers and 25 fast-break points. The Eagles shot 45.8 percent from the field (7-of-24 from three-point range) and hit 15-of-23 free throws.

Braden Hudson had 11 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Casen Nobbe had seven points, three steals and two assists.

Ashton Hazelwood had three points. Micah Whitaker had two points and Avery Davidson added on point.

The loss was the fourth-straight for Model.

Layton Coleman and Dylan Crockett both had 10 points for the Patriots. Keshav Bhandari had six points. Ty Balser and Harrison Parkhurst each had three points.

Riley Mollette had one points and eight rebounds.

Model is set to return to action Monday against Sayre in the 11th Region All "A" Classic.
