High school boys volleyball: Clovis East, Sanger cap season with regional titles

The Clovis East and Clovis high school boys volleyball teams met four times this season.

Twice in the Tri-River Athletic Conference season.

Then, for the Central Section championship.

And finally, Saturday for the CIF Northern California Division I regional championship.

The result never changed.

Top-seeded Clovis East rolled past No. 3 Clovis 25-19, 26-24, 27-25 to win the regional title.

The Timberwolves beat the Cougars in all four meetings, twice in 3-0 sweeps, once in four sets and once in five.

Clovis East took care of business in the NorCal regionals, sweeping No. 8 Foothill-Pleasanton and No. 5 St. Francis-Mountain View.

Clovis (30-5) reached the regional final with a five-set semifinal victory over No. 2 Valley Christian-San Jose, winning 20-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-23, 15-12.

The Timberwolves (41-3) finished their remarkable season on a 21-match winning streak since losing to Valley Christian at a tournament. Clovis East’s other two losses were to Newport Harbor-Newport Beach, the SoCal D-I runner-up.

Sanger holds off Bishop O’Dowd

Sanger won the NorCal Division II regional championship.

The second-seeded Apaches defeated No. 7 Woodcreek-Roseville in four sets, then went five sets against Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep.

That sent Sanger to the final against No. 1 Bishop O’Dowd, and the Apaches came away with a 25-20, 20-25, 25-16, 25-19 win in Oakland for the school’s first regional title.

The Apaches end the season at 41-8.
