High school cross country: CSN, SFCA, Palmetto Ridge qualify boys, girls teams for state

Southwest Florida qualified four girls and three boys teams at the Class 1A-Region 2 meet at Holloway Park in Lakeland on Thursday.

Southwest Florida Christian Academy and Community School of Naples qualified their boys and girls teams. Both SFCA teams were third, while the Seahawks girls were fourth and the boys were sixth.

The Donahue Academy boys grabbed the eighth and final qualifying team spot. The Village School of Naples and Canterbury girls qualified by finishing seventh and eighth, respectively.

Evangelical Christian's Ava Povich was the top local runner, placing fifth in 19:13.20. Katie Beam of First Baptist was eighth overall in 19:58:30, and Gabriella Santucci of Canterbury was ninth in 20:10.20.

Tommy Bade led SFCA, finishing 17th in 21:00.50, and teammates Abby Green and Ella Flynn were 21st and 23rd, respectively. Sloan Wheeler led Community School, placing 19th.

Lauren Lappin topped Village School with a 15th-place finish in 20:50, followed by teammates Mylee Van de Wouw in 28th and Isabella Adams in 31st. Canterbury's Hayden Brands was 16th, behind teammate Santucci's ninth.

In the boys race, SFCA's Hayden Tank led area runners, finishing sixth in 16:44.70. Teammate Blake Wolters was 15th.

Chase Lupo was 24th and Tyler Mastrangelo was 27th to lead Community School. Leonardo Borjon was 11th to lead Donahue Catholic, followed by Winston Fairchild in 21st.

Canterbury's Dylan Bailey finished 18th overall and qualified as an individual.

The state meet is Friday, Nov. 12 in Tallahassee.

Class 4A-Region 2 meet

The Palmetto Ridge boys finished third and the girls were eighth to advance at Holloway Park in Lakeland on Thursday.

Bernardo Barnhart led the boys, finishing second overall in 16:07.70, followed by Jordan Velasquez in 11th (16:53.10) and Chris Amador in 12th (16:54.00).

The Gulf Coast boys placed eighth to grab the final team qualifying spot. William Montayne led the Sharks, finishing 16th in 17:00.40, and Devin Williams was 21st in 17:15.10.

Lehigh's Evan Meyer placed sixth overall and also qualified as an individual.

In the girls' race, the Bears beat out Gulf Coast, 212-252, for the eighth and final team qualifying spot.

Sonia Lountchenko led Palmetto Ridge, finishing 26th in 20:52.90. Nicole Zani led Gulf Coast in 20:22.40, for 16th overall. Lehigh's Gianna Del Pizzo finished 13th in 20:14.50.
