A first-ever state title for Maple Mountain and then Timpview halting a 27-year drought highlighted a competitive race day at the 5A state championship on Tuesday.

For Maple Mountain’s boys, a bit of strategy paid off down the stretch as coach Brett Andrus’ team claimed its first cross-country title in school history.

Andrus knew the race would be extremely tight, and would likely come down to his fifth runner — Tyler Phelps — as it did in divisionals when his team struggled. To help make sure Phelps had teammates to run with, Andrus told Maple Mountain’s No. 6 and 7 runners, Connor Allen and Clay Taschner, to go out and keep pace with Phelps for the first two miles before Phelps started to make his move.

The strategy worked to perfection.

“Tyler passed about 15-20 guys in the last mile while is the difference in a 10-point win,” said Andrus, whose team won with 82 points, with Viewmont in second place with 92 points.

Abram Sumsion was Maple Mountain’s top runner as he finished in fifth.

Maple Mountain’s state title was the result of several years of just learning how to race to win.

“We’ve been talking at Maple Mountain for years about becoming a closing team. There are so many great teams in the state they really do change gears in the last mile,” said Andrus. “To see them take that to heart today and really find another gear, in a difficult situation, I’m really pleased with them and really proud of them. I hope that’s what they take away from this even more than a trophy, that they can be closers.”

Olympus’ JoJo Jourdon showed similar closing ability to win the individual 5A state title.

The senior’s coach told him to hold back and run with the lead pack for the first half of the race, and then make a move. That’s precisely what Jourdan did as he ran away from the field to win by 17 seconds. He won with a time of 14:58.3, with Viewmont’s Gabe Hooper in second in 15:15.2.

“Honestly, I’ve been putting in the work for so long, so many miles, so many hard work outs with my teammates, my friends. And honestly, I came out there today, and I told myself I was gonna win a state title and I did it,” said Jourdan, a Wake Forest commit who has never won a state title in cross country or track. “I’ve been waiting for this for a long time. I’ve had my share of second and third places but I finally got it today.”

Jourdon won the Bob Firman Invitational a few weeks ago in Idaho, which gave him even more confidence to claim that elusive first state title on Tuesday.

Hooper’s runner-up finish helped Viewmont finish in second place as a team with 92 points.

On the girls side, Timpview dominated in the 5A race as it claimed its first state championship since 1996.

The T-Birds won with 62 team points, with Maple Mountain in second with 103 points. Springville was seeking a sixth-straight state title, but it finished in third place as the streak came to a close.

Not surprising, the catalyst for Timpview was junior Jane Hedengren, who won with a 15-second cushion despite not running for the past month because of a stress reaction.

“We’ve been working for this. This is a goal we’ve had since June and we’ve been working for it like we were state champs,” said Hedengren.

She said it was difficult to only work in the pool and on a bike for a month knowing the state meet was around the corner, but credits her teammates for motivating her throughout.

“I’ve definitely grown as a runner and a person. I think more of the reason I was able to come out and get that result today was my team and the people behind me and just the way we’ve been working hard for each other. I was really able to focus and run for something bigger than myself,” said Hedengren.

Hedengren ended up winning with a time of 17:14.7, with Olympus freshman Adria Favero finishing runner-up with a time of 17:29.8

Timpview’s Lily Alder had a huge finish for the T-Birds in third place with a time of 17:34.6, while the rest of her scoring teammates all finished in the top 24 — Ellie Esplin (13th), Kaylee Cheney (21st) and Gwen Boulton (24th).
