High school cross-country: Mountain View and Orem dominate 4A boys and girls divisional meets

Runners from across the state converged on Lakeside Park in Orem on Tuesday afternoon for the state-qualifying 4A cross-country divisional meet. The meet trimmed the classification down for the state meet on Tuesday, Oct. 24 which will be held at the Regional Athletic Complex in Rose Park.

Teams from regions 8, 9, 10 and 11 were split up into two divisional meets, with the top 10 teams in each divisional meet qualifying for state, along with the top six individuals who weren’t on a qualifying team.

American Fork’s Daniel Simmons — the reigning 6A champ — had the fastest qualifying time of the boy runners at 15.23. The defending 6A girls champ, Andie Aagard of Lone Peak, also had the top qualifying time of 18:30.

Mountain View’s Julie Moore posted the top qualifying time for the girls in 19:20, while Orem’s Austin Westfall had the top qualifying time for the boys in 15:36.

The Cedar girls team and Desert Hills boys team won the 4A state meets last year, but the classification has doubled in size since a year ago, which means twice as much competition in their bid to repeat.

Among the new teams in 4A are defending 5A boys state champion Mountain View, and then last year’s second- and third-place teams from 5A girls, Timpanogos and Mountain View.
