High school cross-country: Unlikely winner Tabi Henrie leads Panguitch girls to 1A 4-peat, Monticello captures boys title

Panguitch senior Tabi Henrie hadn’t won a race all year, and it was usually because she was finishing behind teammate Brooke Albrecht. Henrie even admits she’s been comfortable running in second position.

Something clicked though in the build-up to Tuesday’s 1A state championships at the Regional Athletic Complex in Rose Park. As Henrie put it, “I separated my self worth from winning.”

It allowed her to approach the race with a more relaxed mindset, and then when she took the lead midway through the race, allowed her to believe she could win.

“When I passed the two girls right here, I kind of felt powerful. I’m usually in second, but I started to think I could win this thing, and I didn’t usually,” said Henrie.

Henrie maintained that lead all the way to the finish line, claiming the individual 1A title a year after finishing second as she posted a great time of 19:03.6.

Whitehorse freshman Keiarra Martin finished second in 19:30.3, followed by Monticello’s Marah Long in third (19:38.5) and Panguitch’s Brook Albrecht in fourth (19:47.0).

Panguitch’s top four runners finished in the top 15 as it easily claimed its fourth straight 1A state title with 26 points. Rich finished second with 50 points.

“We’ve never had a harder working group,” said Panguitch coach Danny Yardley. “We have 10 girls on the team and they’ve put in lots of miles and lots of time. But I haven’t seen a group that has the camaraderie and the time together, they really push and pull each other.”

That camaraderie was never more evident than after the race said Yardley.

“Brook was the favorite to win the race today, and she’s had such a great season and today was just a rough day for her, but the first girl in line to congratulate Tabi was Brooke. They’ve pushed and pulled her all year,” said Yardley.

Rounding out the top five 1A teams were Whitehorse in third, Monticello in fourth and Altamont in fifth.

On the boys side, Monticello is back on top of 1A after a four-year hiatus.

The Buckaroos placed its top four runners in the top 16, a performance that no other team could come close to matching as they totaled 42 team points to claim their first state title since 2018.

“Last year we went out a little hard and kind of got spread out, this year we kept it together and kept it close. The gap is what got us, one through six, we were about a minute about which you can’t beat that. You’ve not going to lose very often if you do that,” said Monticello coach Jeff Hunt.

Kooper Nielson led Monticello in seventh place, with Jesse Pettit in eighth, Kaden Pehrson in 11th and Curtis Bunker in 16th.

A year ago Monticello finished second at state to Water Canyon — which is competing in 2A this year — and that finish definitely served as motivation throughout the season.

“They looked at it as they had some unfinished business. We felt like we let it get away from us a little bit, and don’t get me wrong, Water Canyon is a great team and they’re going to do great in 2A,” said Hunt.

This year’s runner-up team was Altamont, and that team finish was a huge part of the motivation on Tuesday for eventual individual champ Ashton Arnold.

The senior won last year’s race and was the big favorite to repeat this year — which he did with a 21-second game — but that wasn’t his motivation he said.

“I wanted it just as much as the past year, but this year we were better as a team, my teammates picked it up a lot. So I was more focused on how we could do as a team,” said Arnold, who pretty much went wire-to-wire in finishing in first place with a time of 17:14.1.

Piute’s Kade Severe claimed second place with a time of 17:35.4, with Wayne’s Blake Peterson in third in 17:44.5.
