With nearly 24 hours to go until kickoff, Chaminade-Madonna athletic director Matthew Bishop wasn’t sure the Lions would get to play Friday night.
Although Chaminade is not a member of the Broward County Athletic Association, the school still has to abide by county-wide coronavirus restrictions that apply to all gatherings.
“We were, up until Thursday night, not 100 percent confident that we were going to be able to have a game played,” Bishop said. "They really wanted an operation plan, and the operation plan was very, very detailed. They bounced it back to us a couple times.”
Bishop and the Chaminade administration got their plan approved by the county, and on Friday night, the Lions kicked off the season with a 27-14 victory over reigning Class 2A state champion Hialeah Champagnat Catholic.
