High school football: Ingleside head coach Hunter Hamrick taking job in Rockdale

Ingleside head football coach and athletic director Hunter Hamrick confirmed Tuesday that he has taken a similar position with Rockdale ISD, ending a solid seven-year tenure at the school.

Hamrick has been coaching the Mustangs since 2016 and compiled a 32-43 record with four playoff appearances, including three straight postseason appearances from 2020 to 2022. The Mustangs finished 2022 with an 8-3 record and were the runner-up in District 15-4A Division II to Sinton.

Hamrick will take over a Rockdale program that finished 3-7 in 2022 and lost in the bi-district round of the playoffs and is in the same Class 3A Division I district with state finalist Franklin.

Hamrick, meanwhile, will leave an Ingleside program that went through a major hurricane and a pandemic during Hamrick’s tenure, plus also seen an improvement in facilities.

The school has seen the building of a new indoor facility, along with multiple turf fields, including the football, baseball and softball fields, along with the addition of a soccer program.

“Man, seven years ago this was a much different place than it is now,” Hamrick said. “Not only from an athletic standpoint but from a facility standpoint, there is so much we’ve been able to accomplish here and built up.”

Hamrick served as the offensive coordinator at Rockdale, which is located about 50 miles west of Bryan-College Station, from 2012 to 2016, and said an opportunity opened up to return to the school as head coach.

“It holds a pretty dear spot in my family and my heart,” Hamrick said. “We had some good runs while we were there.”

Hamrick will leave the Ingleside program in good shape after three straight playoff appearances and some talented players returning for the 2023 season. Hamrick won nine games in his first four seasons, but over the last three the Mustangs have compiled a 24-10 record.

“It’s one of those deals where you want people to desire your position and not necessarily because they feel like they can make it better but make it a little bit better than what you left it,” Hamrick said. “We’ve been able to come in and compete in just about everything and it’s not a total rebuilding project.”

A school official said that Butch Porter will serve as the interim athletic director, and the job was posted on Tuesday.
