High school football: Madera makes ‘history,’ NYL showdown is set, plus who’s still unbeaten

Wins over San Joaquin Memorial have been hard to come by for Madera High since it moved to the County/Metro Athletic Conference in 2010.

It meant 13 seasons of the Panthers having the upper-hand on the Coyotes.

Those struggles came to an end in convincing fashion to highlight Friday night high school football action.

Madera routed Memorial 56-35 to improve to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the CMAC.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been more proud of a group of kids,” Coyotes coach Kenneth Paolinelli said. “The heart they show, the fight they show, the way they believe in each other, it’s fun to be a part of each and every day.”

The Coyotes were coming off a 7-6 loss to Bullard last week.

Paolienlli told the team to put that in the past and and focus on getting a win against Memorial.

That they did.

“They made history,” he said.

Madera kept pace with No. 5 Sanger, which defeated Edison 31-0 at Tom Flores Stadium.

Garza rebounded from last week’s loss to the Apaches with a 27-10 victory over Bullard.

Caleb Matthews had four touchdown passes and London Alexander two receiving TDs.

The Wildcats (5-1, 3-0) and Toros (5-2, 4-0) will meet at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 13 at Madera South Stadium.

Thrilling win for Dos Palos

It seemed Mendota had its game in control.

Then Dos Palos came storming back.

Peyton Van Worth connected on a 37-yard touchdown pass to Jesus Bon in the fourth quarter for a thrilling 44-41 win.

Mendota had led 41-29 in the third quarter before Dos Palos chipped away.

Undefeated season ends for Sierra Pacific

It came down to the last second again for Sierra Pacific.

Only this time, it didn’t go the Golden Bears’ way.

Shane Spomer blocked Jacob Cunha’s field goal attempt to seal Immanuel’s 28-27 victory in Tri-County-Sequoia action.

The loss drops Sierra Pacific to 6-1.

Last week, Cunha kicked a 50-yard field goal to give Sierra Pacific a 16-13 win over Selma. It is a school record, according to section historian Bob Barnett.
