HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Odessa High defeats San Angelo Central for first district win since 2018
Oct. 2—On its homecoming, the Odessa High football team turned to its playmakers to end a winless streak of District 2-6A games that lasted nearly three years.
The Bronchos picked up a dominant 41-14 win against San Angelo Central Friday at Ratliff Stadium.
Everything went right for San Angelo Central to start the game, as Adam Robles set his team up with good field position after returning the opening kickoff 56 yards.
San Angelo Central quarterback Tyler Hill would go on to carry the ball three times for 26 yards on the opening drive, capping it off with a 19-yard rushing touchdown to put the Bobcats up 7-0 with 8:35 left in the first quarter.
Known for making big plays with his arm, Odessa High quarterback Diego Cervantes showed what he can do with his legs on his team's opening drive.
He would mirror Hill's rushing score, taking in a 19-yard score to tie the game up at 7-7.
It wouldn't take much longer for Odessa High's Javonte Delce to run a draw play 41 yards up the middle of the Bobcats' defense to put the Bronchos up 14-7 with 4:27 left in the first quarter.
After taking its first lead, Odessa High was pinned against its own end zone after Ty Casey booted a 35-yard punt to the Bronchos' 1.
That didn't affect them, as they were able to drive the ball 99 yards on 12 plays, picking up another score after Cervantes connected with Adrian Madrid on a crossing route starting from the left side for a 24-yard touchdown pass.
Just like their offense, the Bronchos defense was able to make key plays to help maintain a two-score lead into the halftime break.
The Bronchos didn't lose any momentum coming out of the locker room, extending their lead with some quick strike plays.
Delce showed off his speed on Odessa High's first drive of the second half, running for 41 yards on two carries.
His second carry was a 37-yard rushing touchdown, where he turned the corner on the right side before finding himself in the end zone.
He wasn't done scoring, as Cervantes found him for a quick 2-yard pass down the middle of the defense to put Odessa High up 34-7 with 7:23 left in the third quarter.
Both teams would score a touchdown fourth quarter.
