Today, The Observer concludes it comprehensive high school football previews for all of the N.C. counties it covers — Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln and Union. The previews include breakdowns for all teams, conference predictions and a preseason all-county team.

Later this month, The Observer will offer a game-of-the-week, most weeks, in each of these counties, thanks to a new partnership with Deer Park water.

In December, all-star teams in each county in addition to the annual All-Observer team will be released.

Coverage finishes today with Mecklenburg County public schools.

2022 Record: 8-3 (5-1 in the SoMeck 4A Conference).

Conference: SoMeck 4A Conference.

Returning Starters: 11

Returning Lettermen: 35

Key Returning Starters: Jack Ludwick, Sr., Center (6-3, 275); Jake Davids, Sr., RB/DB (5-9, 185); Brandon Stoner, Jr., OL (6-4, 300); Ben Kirsch, Jr., WR (6-3, 190); Austin Settles, Sr., DB/LB (6-1, 200); Chancellor Bryant, Sr., DB (6-0, 175); Hudson Rollar, Sr., CB.

Other Key Returnees: N/A.

Key Newcomers: Will Ryland, Sr., QB (6-1, 185); Gavin Adams, Jr., QB (6-3, 205); Khalil Leak, So., WR/DB.

Outlook: The Knights have been a consistent winner under Greg Jachym, averaging eight wins per season. This year, Ardrey Kell returns an experienced secondary with four senior starters: Chancellor Bryant (37 tackles, three interceptions), Jake Davids (58 tackles, two interceptions) Hudson Rollar and Austin Settles. The Ardrey Kell offense will need either senior Will Ryland, or Gavin Adams to step in and at starting quarterback. The Knights’ offense can rely on a strong offensive line led by 6-foot-3, 275-pound senior center Jack Ludwick and 6-foot-4, 300-pound junior offensive tackle Brandon Stoner. Ardrey Kell has the experience to contend for the SoMeck 4A conference title, which will put it in favorable playoff position.

Interesting Note: Ardrey Kell offensive coordinator Mark Harman is the former Myers Park head football coach.

BERRY

Head Coach: Christopher Redding (1st year).

Outlook: Berry has struggled in recent times, winning just 11 games combined in the past five years. But coach Redding believes his team will be improved after a full off-season program as he enters his second season in charge of the program with 12 starters returning. The Berry defense will be its strength, especially in the front seven where junior linebackers Jasha Brown and Chris Gregory return with senior defensive end Chris Heartley. The Cardinals’ offense will have to reload in the skill positions, but can lean on an experienced offensive line with junior Hermon Ekpenyoung and seniors T.J. Holmes and Mike Sanders.

Interesting Note: Berry coach Christopher Redding is excited about the second year of his tenure as continues to “change the culture,” of the Cardinals’ program.

Key Newcomers: DeJon Douglas, So., RB/LB (6-0, 170); Zion Funderburke, Sr., DL (6-2, 250); Isaiah Houston, Jr., DL (6-2, 205).

Outlook: Butler returns 16 starters from a team that won 10 games, was co-Southwestern 4A (SW4A) conference champions and advanced to third round of the 4A state playoffs. Bulldogs’ junior quarterback Zach Lawrence is back to lead an offense that averaged 38 points per game last year, and should be potent again with junior wide receiver Dequadre Currance (66 catches for 953 yards and 10 touchdowns) and an experienced offensive line featuring seniors Cleveland Graham, Brayson McIver and junior Gabe Heard-Hernandez. The Butler defense will be a strength with nine of 11 starters returning. The Bulldogs will be led reigning Southwestern 4A defensive player of the year, senior linebacker Tyquan Rankin (134 tackles, 38 tackles for loss, four sacks, three interceptions). Rankin will have plenty of help with seniors including linebacker Nick Darling (55 tackles, nine sacks), defensive back Phillip Harris (76 tackles, five interceptions, James Madison commit) and junior defensive linemen Ian Coleman (79 tackles, 28 tackles for loss, 10 sacks) and Jadyn Farmer (49 tackles, five sacks).

Other Key Returnees: Landon Herzberg, Sr., CB (6-0, 185).

Key Newcomers: N/A.

Outlook: A new era of Charlotte Catholic football begins as 32-year-old Matthew Reilly becomes the third Cougars’ head coach in the past 50 years. The Charlotte Catholic offense will operate from the shotgun more often than in the past, but will still rely on the run game with a big offensive line featuring seniors like guard Jackson Gagnon and tight ends Jack Larsen (Notre Dame commit) and Nick Segarra. Larsen will also figure in heavily in the passing game after catching 36 passes for 700 yards and 11 touchdowns as a junior. The Charlotte Catholic defense should be the team’s strength with 10 of 11 starters returning. The Cougars’ secondary returns three senior starters, including Frank Brewer (76 tackles), Joey Hall and Landon Herzberg (three interceptions). Senior defensive end Matthew Leonard (53 tackles) is also back.

Interesting Note: New Charlotte Catholic head coach Matthew Reilly is in his ninth year as a part of the Cougars’ program, serving as an assistant coach, junior varsity head coach and as offensive coordinator in 2022.

Outlook: Community School of Davidson is 18-5 in the past two seasons, with back-to-back Catawba Shores’ 1A/2A conference titles. This year, the Spartans are loaded with experience again as 15 starters returning. Community School of Davidson returns senior wide reciver Tanner Mullins (76 catches for 1,403 yards, 18 touchdowns), senior tight end Brandon Hettwer (31 catches, five touchdowns) plus juniors Brandon Albert (99 catches for 1,174 yards and 16 touchdowns) and Oliver Morris (seven touchdowns). The Spartans’ defense should also be solid with seniors Hettwer and Michael Tejada leading the defensive line. The secondary will also be experienced with Albert, Morris and Mullins returning. Community School of Davidson will be the favorite to three-peat as conference champions, and will have plenty of motivation going into the 2A state playoffs after the season ended in a 41-40 second round loss to Bunker Hill last year.

Interesting Note: The Spartans are a perfect 12-0 in Catawba Shores 1A/2A conference play in the past two seasons.

Outlook: The Cardinals posted a 5-4 record as an independent team in their inaugural varsity season. Now, Corvian Charter begins a new challenge as it enters the Catawba Shores 1A/2A Conference. The Cardinals return 12 starters, which will help. The offense will feature junior running back Cameron Johnson (502 yards rushing, five touchdowns) and junior receivers Andre Jackson and Doug Quarles. The offensive line will also providence stability with senior Tyler Shoeck, and junior Christian Evans returning. Meanwhile, the defense has experience in the secondary with Jackson (42 tackles), Johnson (40 tackles) and Gavin Clark. The front seven includes sophomore James Dukes III (42 tackles, three sacks), junior Quarles (five sacks) and senior Kamari Walker. The Cardinals also return kicker/punter Cooper Peterson, who has all-conference talent.

The East Mecklenburg offense will lean on an experienced offensive line with seniors Frank Guzman and Brandon Westbrook-Smith as well sophomore Joseph Ngoy. Sophomore quarterback James Bailey III and juniors like running back Marquis Byrd along with receievers Takeo Massey and K.C. Carroll will also play key roles. The Eagles’ defense will have to reload in several spots, but has all-conference defensive end Bryce Lee and senior linebacker Keonn Jones back to lead the front seven, while Massey returns in the secondary.

Interesting Note: East Mecklenburg’s last winning season came in 2009, when the Eagles went 9-6.

GARINGER

Key Newcomers: N/A.

Outlook: Since winning the state title in 2017, Harding has struggled going 14-35. With a new head coach in J.T. Stone and only seven starters returning, the Rams will look to their front seven on both sides of the ball to compete. Two-way standouts in offensive/defensive senior lineman Barak Fuller and junior A.J. Brown return with seniors linebackers Alagi Ceesay and Usir Jackson. Senior running back Clifton Seven should also be a playmaker for the offense.

Interesting Note: New Harding head coach J.T. Stone moved across the country with his family to coach the Rams, coming from Santa Barbara High in California. Stone is 58-36 in his coaching career. His daughter, Elle, was a first-team All-Observer in girls basketball at Mallard Creek.

This year, the Huskies will be younger with nine starters back, but still have a lot of young talent. The Hough offense will feature junior quarterback Trey Blakeney, junior running back Jycen Anciso, and senior receiver Jacob Dossey (38 catches for 549 yards), and junior, Sean Brady. Up front, 6-foot-8, 260-pound tackle Egan Boyer (Penn State commit) will lead the offensive line. Last year, the Cougars won nine games and lost in the second round, which will provide plenty of motivation. This season, Chambers’ strength will again be on defense (allowed 11 points per game last year), where it returns nine starters, led by an elite secondary that includes seniors Rondell Carter (Coastal Carolina commit), Keelan Flowe (West Virginia commit, five interceptions) and Dontrae Henderson (James Madison commit, seven interceptions). The front seven is also experienced with seniors King Caldwell and Jaden Meeks up front and middle linebacker Elijah Baskins (91 tackles). The Cougars’ offense will have to reload in some key spots, but can lean on the running game with senior running backs Prince Caldwell (450 yards rushing) and Braylon Vinson (800 yards rushing, eight touchdowns) and 6-foot-3, 340-pound tackle Jeremiah Blaylock up front. Junior receiver Arrion Concepcion and senior Armon Wright also provide playmakers on the outside.

Key Newcomers: N/A.

Outlook: The Knights return eight starters from a team that went 5-5 last year. That gives new head coach Matthew Montroy a challenge with a younger overall team. The Lake Norman Charter defense will be its strength, especially in the secondary where juniors David Wignot (71 tackles, three interceptions) and Major Leak return. Seniors Clayton Adams (43 tackles, four sacks) and Sir Thoms Lawson (34 tackles, five sacks) are also back to lead the defensive front. The Knights’ offense will have to reload, but can depend on its offensive line, which includes senior Justin Adelman and tight end Landon Foshoee.

Interesting Note: The Lake Norman Charter football players organize public service projects each season, and for the past two seasons have worked with “Bags for Hope,” led by Mark Alkins, according to Knights coach Matthew Montroy.

They include junior quarterback Evan Rambert, who started mostly on junior varsity last season, senior receiver, Benjamin Black (Rutgers commit) and tackle Umar Rockhead and junior lineman Jordan Shaw. Rockhead has committed to Charlotte. The Mallard Creek defensive strength is in the middle with senior linebackers Tyrek Brown and D.J. Jones leading the unit.

Key Returning Starters: Thomas Wilson, Sr., OL (6-3, 280); Parks Cromwell, Sr., DB (6-0, 180); Solomon Young, Sr., DL (6-3, 270); Jahari McDonald, Sr., WR/RET (5-8, 170); Jake Bell, Sr., LB (6-1, 205); Wendell Thompson, Sr., QB (6-1, 170); Adam Lueders, Sr., DB (6-0, 165).

Other Key Returnees: B.J. Alexander, Jr., RB (5-8, 170); Max Amedio, Sr., TE (6-1, 200);

Key Newcomers: Brody Keefe, So., WR (6-3, 185); Josh Hines, So., DB/WR (6-2, 170); Miles Baucom, So., WR (6-0, 180); Rodney Dunham, So., DL (6-4, 195).

Outlook: The Mustangs were one of the top teams in the state from 2016-20, going 57-8 in that span. Since then, Myers Park has struggled. The Mustangs are 5-17 in the past two years. This year, former defensive coordinator Chris James takes over as head coach and looks to give a younger team some stability. The Myers Park offense will look to senior quarterback Wendell Thompson to get the ball in the hands of sophomore Marvin Ridge transfer Brody Keefe (offers from Georgia, N.C. State, Ohio State, Tennessee) and senior Jahari McDonald. Mustangs senior Thomas Wilson returns to lead the offensive line. The Myers Park defense has experience on all three levels with seniors including Solomon Young on the defensive line, Jake Bell at linebacker and Parks Cromwell and Adam Lueders in the secondary.

Interesting Note: James will be the fifth Mustangs coach in the past five years. James served as the Mustangs’ defensive coordinator for the past two seasons.

NORTH MECKLENBURG

Head Coach: Damon McKee (4th year).

2022 Record: 5-5 (2-4 in the Queen City Athletic Conference).

Conference: Queen City Athletic Conference/4A.

Returning Starters: 12

Returning Lettermen: 20

Key Returning Starters: Charles House, Jr., OL/DL (6-5, 290); Sadot Grant, Jr., DB/WR (6-0, 185); Jordan Hardin, Sr., MLB (5-10, 210); Louis Howie, Sr., WR (6-0, 185); Isaiah McKee, Sr., RB (5-11, 190); Jahmir Davis, Jr., FS (6-0, 190); Kelson Tate, So., KR/PR/WR (5-8, 160).

Other Key Returnees: N/A.

Key Newcomers: N/A.

Outlook: After going a combined 2-16 from 2019-20, the Vikings are trending in the right direction going 12-8 in the past two years overall. With 12 starters returning, coach Damon McKee thinks his team could climb into the top half of the Queen City Athletic conference standings. The North Mecklenburg offense should be better with multiple playmakers like senior running back Isaiah McKee to go with junior receivers Sadot Grant and sophomore Kelson Tate. Lineman Charles House (6-5, 290), also returns to lead both the offense and defensive lines. The Vikings’ defense will also need senior middle linebacker Jordan Hardin and junior defensive backs Jahmir Davis and Grant to play big roles.

Interesting Note: North Mecklenburg has only one winning season in the past five years, going 7-3 in 2021.

OLYMPIC

Head Coach: Brandon Thompson (5th year).

2022 Record: 11-1 (6-0 in the SoMeck 4A Conference).

Conference: SoMeck 4A Conference.

Returning Starters: 11 (6 offense; 5 defense).

Returning Lettermen: N/A.

Key Returning Starters: Devin Walker, Jr., RB (5-9, 185); De’Angelo Hall, Jr., TE (6-2, 215); Tavarus Boone, Sr., DL (6-4, 230); Solomon Ford, Jr., ATH/DB (6-0 175); Jyron Tosi, Jr., LB (6-1, 205); Cristian Carranza, Jr., OL (6-1, 245); Reese Graham, Jr., RB (5-10, 170); Devin Evans, Sr., LB (6-3, 210); Cameron Watson, Sr., LB (6-1, 205); Lucas Carranza, Jr., Center (5-11, 255).

Other Key Returnees: Brandon Hardy, Sr., OL/DL (6-5, 310); Ki-Lan Harrison, Jr., OL (6-4, 240); Chance Cato, So., QB (6-2, 180).

Key Newcomers: Jadakiss Fields, Sr., ATH (5-10, 180) (Berry transfer).

Outlook: Olympic has been consistent over Thompson’s tenure, averaging eight wins per season. This year, with 11 starters back from an 11-1 team, the Trojans will be a contender to repeat as SoMeck 4A conference champions. The Olympic offense, which averaged 37 points per game last year, will feature two 1,000-plus yard rushers — juniors Devin Walker (1,466 yards rushing, 13 touchdowns) and Reese Graham (1,032 yards rushing, nine touchdowns). They’ll run behind senior offensive linemen Cristian and Lucas Carranza. Junior tight end De’Angelo Hall (42 catches for 802 yards, six touchdowns) will also be a weapon for sophomore quarterback Chance Cato. The Trojans’ defense, which allowed only 15 points per game a year ago, should also be solid with junior linebackers Jyron Tosi (98 tackles) and Cameron Watson (47 tackles), and junior defensive back Solomon Ford (five interceptions), giving the team multiple playmakers.

Interesting Note: Olympic’s overall roster numbers are down as the Trojans’ program feels the effects of Palisades High opening last year.

PALISADES

Head Coach: Jonathan Simmons (2nd year).

2022 Record: 1-9 (0-5 in the SoMeck 4A Conference).

Conference: SoMeck 4A Conference.

Returning Starters: 21

Returning Lettermen: 42

Key Returning Starters: Khamari Lawson, Sr., OL/DT (6-4, 260); Anthony Davis, Sr., DL/TE; Dru Drakeford, So., LB (6-0, 200); Jarek Patulski, Sr., QB (6-1, 170); Jayden Clyburn, So., RB; Joshua Truesdale, Sr., DB/Wr; Meshach Ellis, Sr., DB/KR; Jaylin Morris, Sr., OL/DL; Jarmal Gilmore, Jr., DL.

Other Key Returning Players: Corey Pettigrew, Jr., DB (5-9); Elijah Lane, Sr., OL (6-1); Khaiden Lawson, Jr., OL (6-2).

Key Newcomers: Elijah Bachiller, So., DB (6-2); Fedayeen Turner, Jr., RB (5-9); David Moore, Sr., OL (6-4); John Dilone, So., DL (6-0).

Outlook: The Pumas took the lumps you expect a team to take in their first year as a varsity program. But Palisades will benefit from that experience — 21 starters and 42 lettermen are back on the roster. The Pumas’ offense will need to score more (97 points all season in ‘22), and has their senior quarterback, Jarek Patulski, back to lead the way with all-conference senior lineman Khamari Lawson up front. The Palisades’ defense will have an improved front seven led by all-conference performers like senior defensive end Anthony Davis and sophomore linebacker Dru Drakeford. Palisades still a younger team overall and will have its challenges, but no one would be surprised if the team won a few more games this season, which would be a huge step for the program.

Interesting Note: Palisades beat Calhoun Falls Charter (SC), 52-0, in only their second game as a varsity team, Aug. 26, 2022.

PROVIDENCE

Head Coach: Weslee Ward (5th year).

2022 Record: 5-6 (3-3 in the Southwestern 4A Conference).

Conference: Southwestern 4A Conference.

Returning Starters: 9

Returning Lettermen: 21

Key Returning Starters: Billy Wilkes, Sr., LB (6-2, 200); Connor Shelton, Sr., TE (6-2, 220); Evan Kakavitsas, Sr., WR (6-1, 187); Spencer Makell, Sr., DB (6-2, 175); Cash Topinka, Sr., OL (6-3, 315); Jackson Debe, So., QB (6-3, 180); Evan Caldwell, Sr., LB (6-1, 195).

Other Key Returnees: David Abner, Sr., LB (6-2, 215); Spencer Austin, So., FS (5-9, 165); Kaua Longaray, Jr., DL (5-11, 225); Jayden Woodruff, Jr., DB/WR (5-10, 160); Lincoln Mason, Sr., OL (6-0, 215).

Key Newcomers: Parker Tolley, Jr., OL (6-3, 240); Palmer Stevenson, Jr., LB (6-2, 206); Alex Kuolovatos, Jr., S/LB (6-3, 185) (Covenant Day transfer).

Outlook: Providence has been on the rise in the past three years, going 18-13 in that span. This season, the Panthers’ offense will look to sophomore quarterback Jackson Debe, who has a big arm, to get the ball to seniors like wide receiver Evan Kakavitsas and tight end Connor Shelton. The Panthers’ 6-foot-3, 315-pound tackle Cash Topinka will help pave the way up front. The Providence defense should be a strength with seniors in linebackers Evan Caldwell and Billy Wilkes, defensive back Spencer Makell back to lead the group. Covenant Day transfer Alex Kuolovatos, a versatile player, should have an immediate impact at safety, linebacker and at receiver on offense. Providence has the annual challenge of competing in the Southwestern 4A conference, where finishing in the top half of a league with Butler, Charlotte Catholic and Independence, and returning to the playoffs, would be another successful season.

Interesting Note: Providence quarterback Jackson Debe has worked out for some of the top teams in the country this summer, including Alabama and Penn State, according to Panthers head coach Wes Ward.

ROCKY RIVER

Head Coach: Tyson Fernandez (2nd year).

2022 Record: 2-8 (2-5 in the Southwestern 4A Conference).

Conference: Southwestern 4A Conference.

Returning Starters: 11

Returning Lettermen: 35

Key Returning Starters: Karon Gray, Sr., SS/RB (6-1, 180); Steven Muin, Sr., OLB/DE (6-3, 210); Jaylan Byrd, Sr., RB (5-8, 170); Patrick Threat, Sr., LB/SS/HB (6-0, 190); Kayon Mitchell, Jr., OT (6-5, 250); Kolbe Breland, Jr., OG/DE (6-3, 200); Omarion Davis, Jr., WR/DB (6-0, 175).

Other Key Returnees: Taybion Kinney, Sr., RB/DB (5-8, 170); Cavon Reid, Jr., DE/TE (6-2, 200); Amir Harris, Sr., LB/RB (6-0, 200).

Key Newcomers: Julian Platt, Jr., LB/TE (6-0, 210); Brandon McFadden, So., RB/SS (6-0, 170).

Outlook: Rocky River hasn’t won more than four games in a season since the 2014.

Interesting Note: Rocky River’s last winning season came in 2014, when the Ravens went 9-5 under former coach Jason Fowler, who is now the athletic director at East Mecklenburg. This year, coach Tyson Fernandez believes his team will be much improved with 11 starters and 35 lettermen returning, but will have to prove it in the traditionally strong Southwestern 4A conference. The Ravens’ offense will rely on all-conference running backs in seniors Jaylan Byrd and Karon Gray behind a solid offensive line featuring juniors Kolbe Breland and Kayon Mitchell. The Rocky River defense also has experience with all-conference edge (defensive end/linebacker) Steven Muin, classmate and linebacker Patrick Threat, joining defensive backs in Gray and junior Omarion Davis.

SOUTH MECKLENBURG

Head Coach: Joe Evans (5th year).

2022 Record: 5-5 (4-2) in the SoMeck 4A Conference).

Conference: SoMeck 4A Conference.

Returning Starters: 10

Returning Lettermen: 15

Key Returning Starters: Laderian Lynch, Sr., WR/DB (5-11, 165); Achilles Unger, Sr., OL (6-4, 270); Jack Williams, Sr., MLB (6-0, 190); Martin Garlin, So., WR (6-3, 185); Zay Bolden, Sr., DB/RB (6-0, 190); Cash Hunter, Jr., RB/DB (5-10, 190).

Other Key Returnees: Quinn Miller, Sr., DL (6-4, 220); Cole Bailey, Sr., DL (6-3, 215); Griffin Fickling, Sr., LB (5-8, 195).

Key Newcomers: Kennedy Burns, Jr., RB (5-11, 200); Quinn Rucker, So., TE (6-0, 200).

Outlook: The Sabres were up and down last season at 5-5, after going 9-3 in 2021. This year, South Mecklenburg returns 10 starters. The Sabres’ offense will look to playmakers like senior receiver Laderian Lynch and running backs Zay Bolden, a senior, and junior Cash Hunter to lead the offense. South Mecklenburg senior Achilles Unger is back to lead the offensive line. The Sabres’ defense will be led by senior middle linebacker Jack Williams with defensive line help from senior Cole Bailey and junior Quinn Miller. The secondary will be experienced with Bolden, Hunter, and Lynch. South Mecklenburg has improved a lot in the past three years, with 18 wins in that span, and will look to prove they can keep winning consistently in the SoMeck 4A conference and into the postseason again this season.

WEST CHARLOTTE

Head Coach: Sam Greiner (4th year).

2022 Record: (7-6, 3-3 in the Queen City Athletic Conference 3A/4A).

Other Key Returnees: Rakim Finch, So., WR (6-0, 175); Elijah Littlejohn, So., DE (6-3, 210).

Key Newcomers: Sam Johnson, So., DT (6-2, 250); Sam Napier, Sr., LB (6-1, 210); Dequinder Williams, Sr., CB (6-0, 180).

Outlook: Lions coach Sam Greiner feels he has his best team since he led Harding to the 2017 N.C. 4A state championship. West Charlotte lost a close game to Kings Mountain in the third round of the N.C. 4A playoffs last w. 3A playoffs last season and returns 12 starters, including Michigan-bound linebacker Jaden Smith. Multiple Lions players have Power 5 interest including QB KD Smith, who has an offer from Kentucky.

Interesting Note: Greiner has a history of rebuilding programs, going 37-29 overall in his career, including 17-14 at West Charlotte.

Holloman, Jr., OL (6-5, 330).

Key Newcomers: N/A.

Outlook: The Hawks are 11-11 in the past two seasons. This year, with 13 starters back, Waddell believes his team can get back above .500 and into the playoffs again.
