HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PRIMER: Hirschi maintains position atop TRN Top 10

TRN TOP 10

The TRN Top 10 is subjective. Obviously, the chances of a Class 2A team beating one in 5A is extremely unlikely. And Class A teams play a completely different version of the game. This poll represents the expectations of these teams, reflecting how they rank in district, region and state. Record and previous ranking are in parenthesis.

1. Hirschi (2-0, 1) – The Huskies played a regular season classic against Brock on Thursday. It had a playoff atmosphere, featuring two of the best teams in the state at its respective classification. Brock was Hirschi’s biggest test on its regular season slate. The Huskies are at least a 27-point favorite in the eight games remaining on their schedule.

2. Benjamin (2-0, 2) – Grayson Rigdon has six carries this season. He’s scored a touchdown on each one. He also has three defensive TDs and one special teams score.

3. Holliday (2-0, 4) – The Eagles set up what looked like a tough non-district schedule, and by all expectations, Iowa Park and Jim Ned will contend for the District 3-3A Division I title. But obviously, the Eagles would be the favorite to win that district, too.

4. Rider (2-0, 3) – We like to use PigskinPrep.com as a guide for our analysis, but having the Raiders as 40-point favorites over Decatur was steep. At the same time, Rider wasn’t expected to struggle, let alone need a minor miracle to beat the Eagles. That drops the Raiders are spot in these rankings.

5. Henrietta (2-0, 5) – The Bearcats have consecutive convincing wins against quality teams, outscoring Windthorst and Millsap by a combined 78-14. There’s a great chance the Bearcats will be undefeated when they meet Holliday on Oct. 14.

6. Seymour (2-0, 6) – The Panthers stepped up the competition and beat Lindsay on Friday with Keegan Gilbreath and Brayden Loyd continuing to alternate reps at quarterback. But their tests keep getting tougher with No. 1 Albany visiting Friday.

7. Knox City (2-0, 7) – The Greyhounds have executed the 45-point mercy rule against Strawn and Motley County – the two teams that played for the Class A Division II state championship last season. A lot can change in a season at the six-man level, and Knox City plays in Division I, but it’s an impressive start for the Greyhounds nonetheless.

8. Olney (2-0, 8) – The Cubs’ veer is striking fear into its opponents with quarterback Gatlin Guy and a deep stable of running backs making their version of the triple-option offense elite. But the Cubs have only allowed six points through two games, showing they play at a high level on both sides of the ball.

9. Iowa Park (1-1, 9) – Iowa Park and Wichita Falls High had the most impressive bounce back wins of Week 2. The Hawks racked up more than 500 rushing yards in their demolition of Benbrook, proving worthy of this ranking.

10. Windthorst (0-1, 10) – The Trojans had an early open week and maintained their spot in the TRN Top 10 along with a No. 7 ranking in the DCTF Class 2A Division II state poll. They play No. 6 Muenster (0-2) this week in a rare matchup of winless state-ranked teams.

On the rise – Archer City, Vernon.
